Local leaders honor Red Ribbon Week

In the spirit of Red Ribbon week, several community leaders gathered in front of a fire truck at the Atlanta Fire Department on Monday, October 28. According to RedRibbon. org, “It is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon, October 23 - 31st. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America.” According to their website “Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. “Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. Arbor Day The City of Linden will host a Texas Arbor Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 1, in Linden City Park, where two trees will be planted to honor the occasion. Sponsored by the Linden Garden Club, this event will feature representatives from Texas Forestry in Linden, the L-K FFA, and selected students from L-K Elementary, who will recite a poem and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony commemorates the importance of trees in our community and their lasting impact on the environment, inviting everyone to come together in celebration of nature and to contribute to a greener future for all.

Little Rock Nine’s Mothershed passes

Dr. Thelma Mothershed- one of the famous “Little Rock Nine” passed away on October 19, 2024. Mothershed was born in Bloomburg, Texas on November 29, 1940. She and nine other black students were handpicked by the NAACP to attend the previously all-white Little Rock Central High, selected on the criteria of excellent grades and attendance along with a fortitude to persevere.
