CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - Atlanta has reaffirmed their commitment to the health of the Northeast Texas communities they serve with the renewal of their 10-year agreement with the Atlanta Hospital Authority to operate the hospital and facilities through December 2032.
Last year we saw our largest level of participation in voting and new categories to vote for. Our Readers’ Choice is extremely popular, so we take time every year to see what we can do better to serve our community with it. This year is no different and we have some big changes we are making to make the contest fairer and to be able to get the certificates out to the winners quickly and give everyone a chance to say thank you to those who voted for them. John and Martha Barnes (also spelled Barns) came to Texas about 1841 from Yalobusha Co., MS, where they married on 28 Feb 1835. Martha was born about 1817 in Greenville District, SC (now Pickens Co.), the daughter of Carter C. and Sarah Cannon, who also came to Cass Co. [See separate story about this family.] The 1850 Cass Co., TX, census shows John as having been born about 1813 in Alabama Territory, some six years before it became a state. It is possible, however, that the census informant was wrong, and he was born in the Mississippi or Louisiana territories.

Sergeant Gregg Williams, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Highway Patrol issued a release on January 22 of a vehicle/train collision that resulted in a fatality.
