Mission Atlanta distributes food to those in need

Mission Atlanta, a ministry outreach of First Baptist Church Atlanta, opens its food pantry doors from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday and Friday. Mission volunteers such as Rex Henderson, John Humphrey, Phyllis Stanley and Mattie Chamblee give out food to eligible Cass County residents. Canned food, bread, meat and fresh produce is distributed to those in need. Photos by Raydeen Edwards

City National Bank hosts Flags, Floats and Freedom event

City National Bank in Queen City hosted its Flags, Floats and Freedom event on June 30. The bank gave away maps of the hiking trails at Atlanta State Park, free miniature flags and lifejackets to kids who were present and also cooked hot dogs. Smokey the Bear and Bobber the Water Safety Dog made an appearance during the bank’s event in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Joseph A. Howell

Joseph A. Howell was born ca. March 1823 in North Carolina having ancestral ties to Ireland. He died ca. 1900 and is buried in Courtland Cemetery, Cass County, Texas. On 14 June 1847, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, he married Rachel Sams who was born February 1832 in North Carolina and died after 1907, in Oklahoma where she was living with a daughter. Rachel was the daughter of Thomas Sams and Stacy [Cole] Sams of North Carolina. Joseph A. Howell and Rachel Sams Howell were the parents of nine children:
