Atlanta Middle School wins state Honor Band title

On Thursday, July 26 the Atlanta Middle School Symphonic Band was chosen as the Class 1C State Honor Band at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio.
The band placed first out of eleven 1C middle school bands from around the state. Bands are selected by a panel of five judges and are ranked based off recordings submitted from participating bands. The honor band judging process first starts at the region level. Bands are judged and the top two bands advance to the area level, which consists of five regions. In order to advance from the area level to the state level, bands must once again finish in the top two.
Along with the distinction of being named the honor band, the Symphonic Band will also perform a concert this February at the Texas Music Educators Association Annual Convention held at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio. TMEA is the largest music convention in the world, with a yearly attendance of 30,000 people. Similar to the state marching band contest, middle school and high school bands are only able to compete every other year. This year the only bands eligible to compete were 1C middle schools, 1A/2A, 4A and 6A high schools. Being named as a state honor band is the highest honor a middle school band in Texas can achieve.
In a separate contest, the AMS Symphonic band also competed in the Association of Texas Small School Bands Outstanding Performance Series contest. This competition is strictly for class 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A schools, considered “small schools” and the middle schools that feed them. This competition is judged on individual songs and any band can submit up to three pieces. AMS was one of only two schools in the state to have all three songs advance to the state level. Monterey March finished third in the March Category, Tanchozuru finished second in the Concert Category, andAbracadabra finished fourth in the Concert Category. The top march and top two concert songs from each category will be on a CD that is mailed to all ATSSB members around the state.
The Atlanta Band program has a membership of over 425 students in grades six through 12, and is under the direction of Keith Sanders, David Thompson, Kristen Thompson, Hunter Hale and Larry Breashears.
