JAMES GUY HUGHES, JR.
James Guy Hughes, Jr., 92, of Longview, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, at a local nursing home. He was born Dec. 17, 1928, In Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Guy and Hallie Davis Hughes; grandparents, George and Beulah Groves Hughes and Lorn L. and Della Mae Johnson Hughes; and children, Barbara Julie Hughes, David George Hughes and Jennifer Louise Hughes; and 13 aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Effie Louise Barlow Hughes of Longview; step-son, David Wilson and wife Dana of Longview; step-granddaughter, Ashley Rebecca Wilson Stanley and husband Carter of Longview; and step-granddaughter, Whitney Wilson of Longview; and three step-grandchildren, Caine and Caimen Stanley and Ellis Wilson; cousin, Ted P. Hughes, D.D.S and wife Bonnie of Houghton, La.; cousin, Lee Ellen Benjamin of Atlanta; and cousin, Scott Hughes of Haughton.
Guy attended Atlanta High School (AHS) where he was named to the 21-A All-District team for his expertise on the gridiron as the quarterback for the Rabbits.
He graduated from AHS in 1946, and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He was a member of the Sharon Shrine Temple of Tyler, Waco Scottish Rite Bodies and a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Longview.
Guy was a successful businessman. Beginning in the oil and gas industry with his father eventually he worked for Worrell Bros. Promotional Products in Shreveport for many years. Ultimately, he began his own advertising business, Guy Hughes Company, Inc. in Longview.
Guy and Louise were avid Texas Rangers fans and attended many games at spring training in Florida. He also loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Southern Methodist University Mustangs.
He donated his body to science, so no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Highway 80 Rescue Mission, 3117 W. Marshall Ave., Longview, TX 75604.
