JANET KENNEDY
July 17, 1941 - March 17, 2018
Janet Rose Benson Kennedy, of Atlanta, passed peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 17, 2018.
She was born July 17, 1941, in Springhill, La., to L. J. and Ethel Benson. She was a member of Thomas Street Baptist Church and was a woman of strong faith. It was friends frequently described her as a mother, grandmother, or sister figure to them; friends were just family to her. Her family was EVERYTHING to her. She lived for stories of her children or grandchildren. She had an amazing laugh/cackle and her friends and family tried often to bring that out. Fairness and love were important traits. If loved ones were wronged or hurt, they knew they had an ally in her (and the wrongdoer knew they better watch out if they ever crossed paths with firecracker Jan). She was a small package on this earth, but she was fierce, mighty and strong. “Can’t” was not in her vocabulary, if her mind was set on a task. If you have held Jan’s hand, her skin was velvety soft and she would not let you go.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Curtis Bowen Kennedy II; and four sisters, Penny Penick, Yvonne Loomis, Rose Zynn and Carol McInturf.
She is survived by her daughters, Penny Kennedy Lovejoy and husband Lavon and Pamela Kennedy Boylan; a brother, Jack Benson; sister, Rusty Ingram; four grandsons, Alon Lovejoy and wife Kayla, Curtis Lovejoy and wife Jessica, Jameson and Charles Boylan; four great-grandchildren, Tristan, Cade, Ripley and August Bowen.
Her legacy of love will live on in her children, her grand and great-grandchildren and her family and friends.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Hanner Funeral Service.
Special thanks to Sherri Butler Hinerman and Diane Butler Vinson, who were angel caretakers during Jan’s last days on earth.
