A. M. ‘RIP’ BENEFIELD JR.
Oct. 4, 1943 – April 18, 2018
Alwin Melzin “Rip” Benefield Jr., 74, of Queen City, succumbed to a lengthy battle with renal cancer Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at his residence.
Better known as “Rip” to friends and family, he was the oldest son of Alwin Melzin Benefield Sr. and Lucy Mae Oldham Benefield.
He received that nickname while playing high school football for the Queen City Bulldogs, where he literally “ripped” down the football field carrying the football for a touchdown. He was a lifetime resident of the Ark-La-Tex area and a member of the Queen City United Methodist Church. He was also a veteran of the Texas National Guard, serving his country on active duty during the Berlin Crisis. He was an avid horseman and had served as president of the Texarkana Boots and Saddle Club, where he and his family were members for many years. He was an outdoorsman who also enjoyed gardening with his family.
After retiring from the District 19 Highway Department of Texas as Maintenance Supervisor and District Roadway Superintendent, he continued to serve the community in many additional capacities. Besides being a well-respected public land surveyor with a current license, he was a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Atlanta Lions Club. He was also a member of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge #463 and had attained the prestigious levels of Past Worshipful Master, 32nd Degree of the Scottish Right and he was a Shriner. He was raised Feb. 7, 1977, and remained active for 41 years.
He was also politically involved, having served in a prestigious capacity on Texas Governor Rick Perry’s Financial Advisory Committee, also known as the Council of Governments. He was also a director on the Board of Directors for the Cass County Appraisal District. In addition, he was recently re-elected to another 2-year term to the City Council of Queen City. He was a contributing member of the community his entire life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann Clements Benefield, who passed away Jan. 26, 2007; his parents; one brother, L. C. “Taps” Benefield; and two older sisters, Lucy Benefield Lee Rosser and Dona Benefield Schoppe Wheat.
He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Benefield Wilson and husband Bobby Neil Jr., of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Marcy Benefield Cash and husband Tommy of Hendersonville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; Jeannie Ann Dodd Taylor of Hendersonville, Gary Edward Dodd Jr. and wife Amanda of Queen City and Erin Wilson Ensley and husband Jacob of Cottontown, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Ashton Taylor, Kayleigh Taylor, Owen Dodd, Brandon Taylor, Jordan Taylor and Sadie Dodd.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Hanner Funeral Service.
Funeral services were at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21, in the Hanner Funeral Chapel with Bro. John Burchell officiating. Interment followed at the Queen City Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

GLORIA ‘GLO’ JEAN HERRING

Gloria “Glo” Jean Herring, 74, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
She was born Sept. 26, 1943, in Texarkana, to Alvis and Ruby June Dowd. She retired from Atlanta Independent School District after 42 years of teaching and library services. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Atlanta and directed her beloved hand bell choir for more than 25 years. She was also organist and pianist for many of those years. She loved music, art, her school family, her church family and most of all her own family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by two sons, David Herring and wife Leslie Moses of Bethesda, Md., and Rob Herring and wife Shannon of College Station; brother, Ron Dowd of Atlanta; sister-in-law, Nyla Dowd of Frisco; four grandchildren, Shay and Thomas Herring of College Station and Dina and Tedi Herring of Bethesda; nieces, Jacy Dowd of Houston and nephew Jay Dowd and his wife Stacey of Burnet; and a number of other relatives.
Visitation was from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Hanner Funeral Service.
Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Hanner Funeral Service with the Rev. Jacob Smith officiating.

Hobart Rutherford "Rudd" Key, 68, of Jefferson, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 1, 1949, in Ft. Worth, to David Rutherford and Carolyn Ann Swann Key.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Evelyn Tims Key; children, Carolyn Ann Key and Steven Garrett Key; step-son, Steven Ray Whatley and wife Mirna; step-daughter, Victoria Whatley Coats and husband James Morris; step-mother, Frances Aimer Rounds and husband James Edwin; sisters; Swann Key Wicker and husband Luther and Amy Key Keith and husband Frederick William III; grandchildren; Devin Nathanael Key, Jonathan McKay Whatley and Nathanael James Coats; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Haggard Funeral Home in Jefferson.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Capt. William Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home with Father David F. K. Puckett officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery in Marshall under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home.
Pallbearers included Luke Wicker, Michael Wicker, Albert Key, Steven Whatley, James Coats, Clete Weiser and Ralph Holloway.
