In 2017 a veteran suicide report shocked the country by declaring that about 20 veterans commit suicide every day. That study was based on data collected between 2005 and 2017.
Growing up in the small town of Chinle, Arizona in the middle of Navajo Nation for a girl in the 1970’s meant that school ended after eighth grade. However, Del- Jean “D.J.” Carroll found a way to extend her education and expand her horizons.

As Amanda Bertrand relates about her weekend with RYLA, “Oh, how awkward to get on a bus with 10 strangers (plus a student from my school). It was so SILENT, but not for long. One of the strangers was Goob from Linden who was asked to return to RYLA and he told us we needed to come up with our RYLA names. It really didn’t take long before we were bonding and knew each other’s “names”. Amanda was soon know only as “Smalls”. Even though we were told we’d have no service for our cells phones, it was amazing that the bars disappeared on the phones!
