St. Paul CME receives new flag

Gary Peacock, son of Kathy and Neal Peacock, was traveling the back roads of Cass County when he noticed the American flag at the St. Paul’s CME Cemetery desperately needed to be replaced.

He spearheaded a movement to obtain a new banner for the church and graveyard.

Established in 1873, St. Paul CME Church is one of the oldest in the county.

The present building was erected in 1947.

Just down the road was the Mt. St. Helena School, an all-black school that took home the state basketball championship in the 1930s.

As part of the process to acquire a new flag, Neal Peacock asked Hanner Funeral Service to arrange to purchase one, since they regularly place orders to drape caskets.
