Lions Club talks camp

The Linden Lions Club met for their regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15 at the County Seat Café. The special guest speaker was Peggy Walker who is the Texas Lions Camp Director for District 2x2.

Walker spoke very passionately about the camp and the countless children whose lives it has touched.

The camp, which is held over a nine week period during the summer hosts campers who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, Down Syndrome, and physical disabilities.

The goal of the camp is simple; give campers the chance to do the things that they may not normally get to do. At Texas Lions Camp, they truly believe one can accomplish anything and encourage campers to do so through teamwork. It also gives campers the opportunity to meet those who are like them. Walker shared the story of a girl who was newly diagnosed as diabetic and her struggle with it. Her first time at the camp, Walker shared, allowed her the opportunity to learn that she isn’t alone.

Indeed, Walker’s story moved many of those in attendance to tears and shows the importance of the camp. Currently, the camp, located in Kerrville, is closed due to storm damage and the pandemic.

Since camp was unable to be held this year, those who run the camp sent out boxes full of supplies to those accepted to the camp and held a virtual camp.
