This is Your Home Town

A word from the Atlanta Mayor

Atlanta, Texas is a great place to live and raise a family, a great place to locate and grow a business, and a great place to visit and relax. This is the truth and it is my mantra. It has been said that enthusiasm is contagious and from what I have seen recently in our town, I wholeheartedly agree. There is a lot going on in Atlanta, Texas. New construction in both residential and commercial segments is happening in our town. Business in our downtown and on the loop continues to thrive and expand. Atlanta’s sales tax revenue has been up over 5% year over year for the last several months. I encourage you to continue to shop local. Shopping local helps employ local people and keep local stores in business, but it also helps keep your property taxes lower. As you pay 8.25% on a retail purchase, 6.25% goes to the state and the other 2% helps fund city services. More revenue to the city through sales tax means less reliance on property tax. In Atlanta, we’ve had the same property tax rate for over six years. We also have a professional and well-trained police force and fire department staff. Our public works department are some of the hardest working unsung heroes in our community. They keep the water flowing in the right directions and are always willing to go the extra mile to help a resident. We also have a wonderful library that is a cornerstone of our community. I’m proud to be a part of Atlanta, Texas.

This is your town! Take ownership. I hear people promote and defend their favorite sports teams all the time. They support a group of players they’ve never met, owned and run by people they don’t know. I see brand names plastered on clothing and on vehicles supporting and advertising companies that are popular. Maybe those folks are stockholders and are simply supporting a company they’ve invested in. Somehow, I doubt it. The folks sporting those stickers on their truck and name brand clothing likely don’t know anyone that works at the company and have no personal connection at all to that nameless faceless corporation. It feels good to be a part of a winning team and there’s nothing wrong with supporting a brand you like. But if you’re looking for a winning team to be a part of or a brand to support, you don’t have to look far. Atlanta, Texas is thriving. Your home town is something special. Our schools are excellent, our cost of living and crime rate are low. We’re high on liberty and low on taxes. The quality of life here is great with fresh air, a quality local hospital, and most of the modern amenities of a larger city. If you’re miserable here, you’ll likely be miserable anywhere. Happiness is a choice.

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Atlanta. As a young rebellious teenager, I wanted nothing more than to get away and experience life outside this little town. I’ve been all over the world and seen all kinds of places. I’m grateful to have grown up here and happy to have the opportunity to raise my family here. There have been other opportunities in the far flung reaches of the world where I could have made a great living in relative anonymity. Instead, I’ve chosen to reside in this little corner of Northeast Texas because it is wonderful in its own way. Many roads lead to and from our town and I’ve taken them all. There is nothing here holding me or anyone back. I love to travel and experience other places and cultures but Atlanta, Texas is my hometown. If you’re looking for a new hometown, Atlanta, Texas is a great place to live and raise a family, locate and grow a business, or visit and relax.
