Queen City Bulldogs outlast Rivercrest, 38-28
Queen City opened its football season last Friday night with a 38-28 win over Rivercrest.
The game was tight throughout but the Bulldogs ended the game with win No. 1 under its belt.
First Quarter
Queen City scored first as junior quarterback Clint Wiley hit Kaden Fincher on a 38-yard pass play.
The point after was no good but the Bulldogs had a 6-0 lead.
QC and Rivercrest traded possessions until the Rebels picked up a loose ball and returned it for a score with just under seven minutes left in the opening frame.
The PAT was good and Rivercrest had a 7-6 lead.
Second Quarter
Both teams went back-and-forth for much of the second stanza until Wiley connected with Lathan Chamblee on a 10-yard strike. The PAT was no good but the Bulldogs were back on top 12-7.
The final minute was chock full of scoring as Rivercrest scored with 49 seconds left in the first half and QC followed that up with a 70-yard kickoff return by Jeremiah Drayton.
The Rebels went up 15-12 after a successful 2-point play but QC held the halftime lead at 18-15 after the nice return by Drayton.
Third Quarter
The Bulldogs received the ball to begin the second half and promptly scored on a 10-yard pass from Wiley to Rylee Green.
Wiley scored on the 2-point conversion and the Bulldogs increased its lead to 26-15.
Rivercrest answered with a touchdown a couple of minutes later and after the good PAT was just down 26-22.
The Bulldogs scored once more in the third quarter. The PAT was no good but the Bulldogs led 32-22 going into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The final frame was a back-and-forth affair until Drayton crossed the goal line on a 36-yard gallop with four-and-a-half minutes left in the game.
The PAT was no good but QC was up 38-22.
Rivercrest scored a minute or so later on a long pass play and pulled within 10 after a missed 2-point attempt.
The Bulldogs sealed the 38-28 victory. QC racked up 300 yards on offense which included Drayton rushing for 134 yards and Wiley passing for 115.
Queen City travels to New Boston this Friday night with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
