Martin, Clayton qualify for state bass fishing tournament

Luke Martin and Remington Clayton, along with boat captain Steve Crumpler, qualified for the state bass fishing tournament at Lake Sam Rayburn on May 2021. Both are members of Atlanta High School’s Bass Fishing Team.

There were 216 teams competing in the regional tournament at Cedar Creek Lake, including another AHS team, Max Addington and Logan Groce, with boat captain Travis Addington. To qualify for the state tournament, anglers had to finish in the top 30 percent of the regional tournament.

Atlanta participates in the Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA), which is a statewide nonprofit organization that provides a venue for high school students to have the opportunity to compete in organized tournaments while establishing strict guidelines and academic standards that will allow student anglers to excel in the classroom and on the lake.

The AHS team is a member of the Northeast Division of THSBA. Other schools in this division are Caddo Mills, Quinlan-Ford, Grand Saline, Liberty-Eylau, Franklin County, Mt. Pleasant, Union Grove, Winnsboro, Camp County, Harmony, Pewitt, Prairiland, Rains, Mineola, Rivercrest, Gilmer, North Lamar, Boles, Alba-Golden, Chapel Hill, Cooper, Chisum, Quitman, Redwater, Commerce, New Diana, Hawkins, Lone Oak, Texas High, Gladewater, Daingerfield, Sulphur Springs and Hooks.

Boat captains are volunteers from the community who generously give their time and resources to promote youth bass fishing.

The boat captains for the 2022-23 season were: Steve Crumpler, Travis Addington, Mark Cobb and Jeff Dryden. Other AHS anglers this year included Easton Owens, Cason Whatley, Eli Dryden and Easton Whatley.

All AHS boys and girls are eligible to participate in the fishing team. For more information about how to join next year’s team, contact advisor Mark Cobb at 903-799-8842
