Girls overcome loss of coach to take second in state
Atlanta Area 10U/12U Softball Team Battitude won State Runner Up in the USA Softball of Texas National Girls Fastpitch Tournament held last week in The Woodlands, Texas. Since the beginning of the season in March, the team amassed a record of 45 wins and 10 losses.
On April 12, Marcus McPherson, one of four team coaches, died suddenly of a massive heart attack at the age of 38.
The other coaches - Robert Brooks, Ben Garett, Ricky Brewer and Jeff Foster - waited to tell the team after the game they were playing that day was over.
“They were just devastated,” said Brooks, who was also Marcus’s best friend. “The girls had no idea why he didn’t show up for the game.”
Rather than fall apart, the group of preteens dedicated the rest of the season to Marcus. “The day after he died, I was in the stands watching their game because Makyna wanted to play,” said his wife Heather Baker, who is also mother to Ayden McPherson and Presley and Michael Dubuisson.
“It was a bumpy season – pretty rough,” said Brooks. “Considering everything they went through, they did well.”
Members of the team are: Makyna McPherson, Chloe Sims, Bailey Brooks, Reili Brewer, Caralajah Henderson, Ella Garrett, Kyndal Snow, Lexi Brooks, Daisy Navarro, Brynn Foster, Gabby Petrofsky and Reyna Baird.
The core group of the team has been playing together for three years. They will continue to play when the Fall Ball season picks up later this year.
