Bulldogs edge Tigers 46-44 in OT
The Queen City varsity boys’ basketball season got underway on Nov. 15, in Queen City at the Sloan Memorial Gymnasium with an overtime win over the Daingerfield Tigers by a score of 4644. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start, behind the senior leadership of Clayton Whittenberg, Reggie Harrison and Gauge Davis.
The lone bench points came from a Kameron Andrews’ 3-pointer midway through the first quarter which saw the Dawgs racing to a 19-7 lead after one. The Bulldogs never trailed in the first half and went into the intermission up by nine, 25-16 The Bulldogs managed to take a 12-point lead coming out of the half on Trevonne Horsley’s three. The Tigers wouldn’t lie down as Queen City struggled with keeping possession of the ball and provided the Tigers the opportunity to crawl back in. The third quarter saw both teams get up and down the floor while accumulating fouls.
The Tigers took a 3-point lead early in the fourth at 33-30.
From there, the Bulldogs stormed back to take a 3-point lead at 42-39 with one minute left. Daingerfield scored three points on foul shots to tie the game at 42 at the end of regulation.
Queen City scored first in OT but needed a number of defensive stops, including a huge charge taken by Messiah Grundy, to outlast the Tigers in the extra period bringing the contest to a 46-44 final.
The Dawgs were paced by Harrison’s 19 points, 12 points from Whittenberg and six apiece from Davis and Horsley. Grundy didn’t score but he took three charges that were all essential to the win as well.
