On Dec. 7, the Longhorns and Lady Longhorns traveled into Arkansas to take on Fouke.
In the boys’ game, McLeod jumped out to a 15-7 lead and held a 23-18 lead at the break.
The second half was close but Fouke couldn’t make up enough points for a comeback as the Longhorns won 41-35.
Kannon Dempsey led the way with 16 points, Tyler Williams added 11, Henry Teer nine, Mason Teer three and Brennan Penny two.
The Lady Longhorns fell behind 19-12 after the first quarter of play but had a 31-27 lead at halftime.
The third frame was close as Fouke outscored the Lady ’Horns 14-13 and went into the final quarter down just 44-41.
The Lady Panthers made a 17-9 run in the fourth frame to win the contest 58-53.
Ella Lambeth went off for 16 points, Kenslee Cross added a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards, Stormy Johnson had 10 points, Rielyn Schubert posted six points, Chassie Gryder had five points and Regan Johnson had five points, seven assists and five rebounds.
McLeod’s varsity boys’ basketball team hosted its tournament Dec. 9-11.
On day one, Atlanta topped McLeod’s JV team 63- 33, Hooks beat Harmony 62-51, White Oak defeated Texas High’s JV team 78-30, McLeod beat Elysian Fields 51-18, White Oak beat McLeod’s JV 61-32, Harmony beat Elysian Fields 55-28, Atlanta topped Texas High’s JV 55-45 and Hooks beat McLeod 51- 44.
On day two, Texas High’s JV defeated McLeod’s JV 62-53, Hooks dominated Elysian Fields 69-33, White Oak edged Atlanta 64-61 in overtime and McLeod smacked Harmony 40-27.
As the bracket played out, Harmony beat Elysian Fields 53-27, Texas High’s JV defeated McLeod’s JV 74-41, Texas High’s JV routed Elysian Fields 79-36, McLeod’s JV edged Harmony 54-52, White Oak thumped Elysian Fields 62-22, McLeod topped Texas High’s JV 49-43, Hooks beat McLeod’s JV 62-25, Atlanta beat Harmony 66-62, White Oak downed McLeod 54-34 and Hooks beat Atlanta 62-60 in double OT.
In the third place game, McLeod topped Atlanta 58-50 and in the championship game White Oak drubbed Hooks 67-48.
All-Tournament players from our coverage teams were McLeod’s Braden Parker and Atlanta’s Alex Boston.
Queen City
On Dec. 6, the M.U.M.S. Lady Bulldogs hosted DeKalb.
Both the seventh grade A and B teams lost to the Lady Bears. The leading scorer for the A team was Bailee Black and the leading scorer for the B team was Ava Shelton.
The eighth grade team lost to DeKalb 27-12 with Dori Sasser putting up six points and Amyia Young four.
On Dec. 7, the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball program battled county foe Hughes Springs.
The varsity team won 49-40 with Mallori Stringer pouring in 10 points and Jamecia Cook adding nine.
In the JV contest, the Lady Bulldogs won 20-10 with Madison bailey leading the way with seven points.
Bloomburg
Bloomburg’s varsity girls’ basketball squad opened district play on Dec. 7, against Sulphur Bluff.
The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 16-8 lead but Sulphur Bluff closed the gap before halftime and entered the break down just 26-24.
The second half was as close as it gets as Bloomburg outscored Sulphur Bluff 26-25 and hung on to win 52-49 over the Lady Bears.
Cassie Glasgow put up a double-double as she amassed 32 points and 10 boards, Haylee Breedlove scored nine points and had eight rebounds, Katie Mote added four points and four boards, Kenzie LaDuke had three points, Katlen McKinnie posted two points and Kaleigh Glasgow had two points with 12 rebounds.
Atlanta
Atlanta battled Pleasant Grove on Dec. 7, on the road.
The Rabbs were down as much as 25 points but clawed back to within three. PG was tough down the stretch and won 68-61.
Alex Boston posted 32 points, Aidan Boston had 10, kam Dickerson six, Caleb King five, Stacy Darty four and Braylyn Rowe two.
