Atlanta, Queen City track athletes compete at Regionals
Atlanta and Queen City track athletes competed at the Region 2-3A track meet this past weekend in Whitehouse.
Each athlete left it all on the track but the meet was not without controversy.
The article concerning the controversy will be in next week’s edition of the Journal-Sun as we gather more information and try to reach out to the UIL for comments.
The story involves officials being on the track when they shouldn’t have been and the disqualification of Atlanta’s 4x2 and 4x4 boys’ relay teams.
Atlanta Boys
Aside from the injustice shown to Atlanta’s relay teams, Stacy Darty earned another trip to State after he placed first in triple jump at 45 feet, 2 3/4 inches and nabbed third in 300m hurdles at 39.52.
At Regionals the top two performers move on to State, but if an athlete turns in a fantastic third place finish which beats out the other regions, then that athlete moves on to State as well.
The 4x100m relay team of Cooper Swanson, Markeylin Batton, Isaiah Chandler and JaBranden Wells is headed to State after placing first at 42.09.
Other athletes that performed at regionals included: Caden Walker who placed 11th in the shot put event with a toss of 40 feet, 4 1/4 inches, Marquavion Owens who placed fourth at 44 feet, 8 inches in triple jump, Aidan Boston who placed fifth in high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches and Matthew Morin who placed sixth in 800m run at 2:03.60.
Atlanta Girls
The Atlanta girls won several titles throughout the year and have two relay teams going to State this year.
The 4x200m team of Shamijala Gillam, JD Larry, Makaylin King and Toya Hurd placed second at 1:46.16, and the 4x100m team placed third at 49.57.
Other athletes that performed at regionals included: Caitlynn Bailey who placed fifth in high jump with a mark of 5 feet even, the 4x400m relay team who placed sixth at 4:18.30, Lucy Ransom who placed 10th in the 1600m run at 5:55.93 and Kaylon “KP” Partain who placed eighth in the 800m run at 2:31.59.
Queen City
Queen City’s Toni McCellon placed third overall in the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.64 at the Region 2-3A track meet this past weekend in Whitehouse, Trent Granberry placed fourth in 400m dash at 51.46 and freshman Makenna Hamilton placed 11th overall in the discus event with a toss of 90 feet, 6 inches.
State field events start at 9 a.m. and running events begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, for Class 3A.
