Festivities kick off on Friday

Journal-Sun Report

The Wildflower Trails of Texas Festival marks the vibrant beginning of wildflower season in Northeast Texas, drawing visitors to explore scenic stretches along Texas Highways 49, 155, and 11 between Avinger, Hughes Springs, and Linden.

Each spring, the region transforms into a colorful landscape of blooming wildflowers, and the festival, scheduled for April 24-26, brings the community together with a lively mix of events that celebrate local culture, heritage, and outdoor beauty.

At the heart of the festivities is the ever- popular Cass County Championship Rodeo, held at Texas Highway 8 and Farm-to-Market 1399 in Linden. This classic Texas rodeo experience offers affordable fun for all ages, with adult tickets at $10, children ages 6–12 at $5, and free admission for kids 5 and under. With free parking and nightly entertainment, the rodeo features crowd favorites like mutton bustin’ at 7:30 p.m. (limited to 20 riders per night), junior barrel racing for participants 14 and under, and the always-anticipated critter scramble for children.

For those looking to start their day with energy and purpose, the festival’s 5K race kicks off at 8 a.m. in front of the Linden Masonic Lodge on East Frazior Street. Runners of all levels can participate, with entry fees set at $25 before race day and $30 on the day of the event. Awards include $100 prizes for top male and female finishers, along with medals for top placements across age groups. Proceeds from the race support a meaningful cause—benefiting students at Linden-Kildare High School through the Fred Wilbanks 5K Scholarship.

Car enthusiasts will appreciate the Car Show, where vehicles from every era—from pre-1940 classics to modern builds—are showcased. Registration runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for $25 per entry. With multiple categories for cars and trucks, participants compete for trophies, $100 class prizes, and a $200 Best of Show award. The event also includes door prizes and a 50/50 drawing, adding excitement for spectators and entrants alike.

One of the festival’s traditions is the Wildflower Trails Parade, beginning at 2 p.m. at Linden Elementary on East School Lane and winding through downtown. With lineup starting at 1 p.m., the parade brings together community groups, floats, and performers in a colorful celebration of local pride.

Nature lovers won’t want to miss the 56th Annual Wildflower Garden Show, hosted by the Linden Garden Club. This year’s theme, “America: One Nation Under God,” sets the stage for a stunning display of blooms, unique plants, and fragrant wildflowers. Visitors can gain gardening inspiration, learn new techniques, and connect with fellow enthusiasts.

Adding a historical and artistic dimension, the Quilt Show features a special presentation by the Pleasant Hill Quilters titled “The Secret Quilt of the Underground Railroad.” This event explores how quilts once served as symbols of communication and hope. Guests can also participate in a raffle for a handcrafted quilt, with tickets priced at $5 and the drawing scheduled for Juneteenth.

Rounding out the celebration, the Art Show transforms the halls of the Cass County Courthouse into a gallery of local creativity, showcasing works from talented artists across the region.

Altogether, the Wildflower Trails of Texas Festival offers a rich blend of tradition, community spirit, and natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn by the rodeo thrills, artistic showcases, or simply the breathtaking wildflower scenery, this annual event captures the essence of small-town Texas at its finest.
