NJHS members give presentation
Members of the National Junior Honor Society treated members of the Queen City Independent School District school board with a presentation during the Monday, Feb. 23, meeting.
The students explained to the board members the various fundraisers they have held and what they have planned for the end of the school year.
For Valentine’s Day, NJHS member Bostyn Majors said they sold “CandyGrams” as a fundraiser and made about $450.
To give the board an example of what a “CandyGram” was, the NJHS students presented each board member with one as a gift.
Maggie Rudel, NJHS secretary, said they did a similar fundraiser around Halloween and called them “Boo-Grams.”
The NJHS also participated in Toys for Tots, placing a box at each campus for donations.
“We collected more than 50 toys,” Rudel said. As a reward for the class donating the most toys, the sixth grade was treated to cookies and hot chocolate.
Jack Sumpter, treasurer of the NJHS, helped out at the Trunk or Treat, handing out around five pounds of candy.
NJHS Advisor Rachel Hogue commended the students on their hard work and the efforts they put into the fundraisers and other events such as the Toys for Tots.
Other members of the NJHS at QC ISD include Arri Simmons, president; Allie Berry, vice president; Kayson Saulsbury, parliamentarian; and members Stella Johnson and Jordyn Young.
As the meeting got underway, board members heard from Shannon Henderson who gave highlights of the District Annual Report that includes the Annual Performance Report, campus Performance objectives, a report of violent of criminal incidents (of which there were none, she said), House Bill 3 Board Goals, and information received from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. All of this information is available on the QC ISD website, Henderson said.
In other matters: - The board approved Rhonda Soileau as the election judge and Susan Greig as the alternate election judge for the upcoming school board election on May 2.
- The board approved the Delay of Teacher Certification Plan and Application in response to House Bill 2 which restricts the use of uncertified teachers for core subjects.
