Scott Joplin Commemorative Stamp

This week’s Cass County Pioneer is a musician. Scott Joplin was a composer and pianist who was born near Linden, Texas in 1868. By the time Joplin was seven years old, he was already proficient in playing a banjo and had begun to learn the piano. To encourage Joplin’s piano skills, his mother agreed to domestic labor for a local attorney who owned a piano, so that Joplin could practice. In 1875, Joplin moved to Texarkana with his family, where he began taking piano lessons, as well as instruction in reading sheet music.

By 1888, Joplin was working as an assistant music teacher at the Texarkana Negro School, as well as playing piano in local small shows around Texarkana. Next, Joplin moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he picked up the latest trend in music, a syncopated piano accompanied by heavy bass playing, which later became known as ragtime. As ragtime popularity soared, Joplin traveled across the central United States and the east coast before finally settling in New York until his death in 1917. In the century since his death, Joplin’s legacy and music have been honored in numerous films and musicals and a U.S. Postal Service commemorative stamp. Finally, in 1987, Scott Joplin was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame.
