The Gay family of Cass County

The Gay’s of the Center Hill Community, Cass County, Texas, are representative of America’s melting pot and the migration patterns of its immigrants. George Seal “Buster” Gay and Joseph Lee “J.L.” Gay are the elders of the present family and still live on the original Gay farm in Center Hill. Their paternal and maternal lineages reflect the rich history that belongs to those earlier generations that fought the battles and moved the frontiers.

Henry Gay emigrated from England to Nansemond County, Virginia in mid-1600, and died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, circa 1688. His son, Henry Gay, Jr., married a daughter of Robert Lawrence.

There were no children from this marriage. Allen’s son, Thomas, m. Mary___( b. 1797 NC, d. 1865 Etowah Co, Al), and they had nine children: the names of two older daughters and a son are not known. Two other daughters were Catherine, Sarah, and sons, John Henry, Charles B., and Nicholas W. Thomas, a farmer, had at least three of his sons serve in the War Between the States: John Henry Gay, Charles B. Gay, and Nicholas W. Gay. John Henry Gay was wounded in the head at Rocky Face, Georgia in May 1864, during the defense of Atlanta from Sherman’s Union Army. He never recovered from the wound, and died in May, 1866.

John Henry was a farmer in Heard County, Georgia, and in 1850 he married his cousin, Martha Washington Dyer. John and Martha had eight children, all born in Heard Co, Ga: Mary E., John Enoch, Moses (Major) Allen C., twins, William Elias J. M., and Sarah C. J. T., Daniel Henry, Emily Catherine, and Joseph Samuel Lee.

Joseph Samuel Lee (Joe) Gay remained with his mother and, as he grew to adulthood, helped to operate their Heard County farm. The Reconstruction policies of the federal government against Confederate veterans resulted in the family being “taxed” out of their property.

Like many other victims of the harsh Reconstruction Governments of the defeated South, most of John Henry’s children headed west with the loss of the family farm. John Enoch Gay and wife Nancy (b. 1853 Tn) moved to Titus Co, Tx. Joe, Daniel Henry, and mother, Martha Washington Gay moved to Carroll Co, Ar (Kings River Twp).
