Brooks Hosptial
Built in 1951, Brooks Hospital, on the corner of Miller and Louise Streets, was lauded as the most up-to-date medical facility in Cass County and a rival to Ellington Memorial Hospital on Hiram Street. The Brooks brothers - Dr. Jesse Miles and Dr. Marshall James - operated the hospital/clinic, which had begun in 1942 inside their mother’s home on West Street. Since closing in 2003, the building has fallen into ruins under the control of the late Dr. Jesse and Virginia Brooks’ Trust. Recently, the building was donated to Lucky U Rescue to be used as a dog shelter. However, the asbestos abatement was cost-prohibitive. Last month, Mayor James Brooks intervened and worked out a deal in which the owners would donate the deed to the City of Atlanta. The site will be abated and demolished within the next several weeks. Immediately following, construction will begin on a new Genesis Primecare/Ellington Clinic, bringing the old rivalry full circle, and that corner will once again be the heart of healthcare in Atlanta.
