Cass County Historical Commission Honored with Prestigious Statewide Award

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized the Cass County Historical Commission (CHC) with its 2024 Distinguished Service Award (DSA)—a top honor celebrating excellence in preserving Texas’ rich history and cultural heritage.

This annual award highlights CHCs that go above and beyond in initiating and carrying out programs that safeguard the stories, places, and traditions that make Texas unique. In 2024, CHCs across the state contributed an astounding 372,866 volunteer hours—an in-kind contribution valued at more than $11.6 million to the people of Texas.

The Cass County CHC stood out for its exceptional dedication, meeting the state’s highest standards for preservation work, community engagement, and organizational excellence. On August 12, 2025, the Cass County Commissioners Court proudly presented the award certificate during its regular meeting, commending CHC members for their passion, expertise, and countless hours of service.

“Our CHC volunteers are the keepers of our local story,” said Cass County Judge Travis Ransom. “This award is a testament to their tireless work and to the value of preserving our heritage for generations to come.”

The THC provides guidance and resources to more than 200 CHCs statewide, as outlined in the Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 318. Working under the direction of county officials, CHCs develop programs that protect historic and cultural landmarks, educate the public, and strengthen community identity.
