Judge Howard F. O’Neal
This week’s Cass County Pioneer made an impact in civic leadership and politics. Howard Francis O’Neal was born on September 22, 1853, in Atlanta, Texas. He established a long and respected legal career in Cass County, Texas. He practiced law in Atlanta, Texas, often in partnership with his brother, Hardy A. O’Neal, who also served in the Texas Legislature. Howard O’Neal held the position of County Judge, a role that encompassed both administrative and judicial responsibilities in rural Texas counties during that era. He participated in the Democratic State Convention in 1896, representing Cass County. His involvement in such political activities indicates his engagement with the governance and political discourse of his time. Howard F. O’Neal passed away on December 6, 1935, in Shreveport, Louisiana and is buried in Pinecrest Cemetery in Atlanta. Judge O’Neal’s dedication to law and public service left a lasting impact on Cass County and serves as a testament to his commitment to justice and community leadership.
