Cass County and TxDOT Team Up to Improve Roadway Safety

Representatives from the Atlanta District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) met with Cass County Judge Travis Ransom and Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Terri Price to discuss three new safety initiatives aimed at reducing traffic-related fatalities in our community.

The presentations were led by Weston Huett, Will Davis, and Anna Davis, students participating in TxDOT’s summer internship program. They outlined three important programs:

Street Racing Kills (SRK) Sobriety Monitoring Program, and Car Seats for Low-Income Families

Cass County has seen five speed-related traffic deaths since January 2022 and continues to outpace state and national averages in driving under the influence and open container violations. Many local families also struggle to afford new car seats, putting the youngest passengers at risk.

In response, Cass County plans to train and certify certain county employees to properly install car seats and serve as a local distribution point for the TxDOT program. The County is also exploring ways to implement the SRK program to address dangerous speeding and is developing strategies to curb impaired driving and open container violations.

These efforts reflect a strong partnership between Cass County and TxDOT — working together to make our roads safer for everyone. In the ten-year period from 2014 to 2023, more than 37 percent of traffic fatalities in Texas involved drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. The majority of these fatalities occurred between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Saturday or Sunday. Driving under the influence (DUI) crash fatalities are highest among males between the ages of 19 and 35.

Cass County Judge Travis Ransom and Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace, Judge Terri Price meet with Atlanta District Engineer Rebecca Wells and TxDOT representatives to discuss traffic safety.

Note: A few short days after this meeting, beloved Atlanta District Engineer Rebecca Wells passed away unexpectedly. We join her family, her TxDOT family, and the entire community in mourning her loss. She was a dynamic leader and wonderful advocate for our region.
