Why Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) matter

EMPOWERING PARENTS, STRENGTHENING TEXAS:

Every child is a gift, each bringing their own talents, creativity, and ambitions into the world.

But not every child learns the same way, and not every school is the right fit for every student. As a mother who homeschooled both of my children from kindergarten through high school, I understand firsthand the importance of tailoring education to a child’s individual needs. I also know that many families in East Texas don’t have the flexibility or financial means to make that choice. That’s why I strongly support Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) and applaud Governor Greg Abbott for championing school choice for all Texans.

For twenty years, I’ve been actively involved in advocating for parents and students in our community, and I’ve seen the challenges families face when the local public school isn’t the right fit. Parents shouldn’t have to make impossible sacrifices just to ensure their child receives an education that meets their unique needs. Whether it’s a child who thrives in a structured classroom, one who benefits from hands-on learning, or a student who needs specialized attention, families should have options—not be forced into a one-size-fits-all system.

East Texas families take pride in our strong values, tightknit communities, and our belief in personal responsibility. ESAs align with these principles because they put the power back into the hands of parents. With ESAs, parents can use allocated education funds to enroll their children in private schools, charter schools, homeschool programs, or specialized tutoring services—whichever path best serves their child’s learning journey.

This isn’t about taking money away from public schools; it’s about making sure every Texas child has access to the best education possible, regardless of income or zip code.

Governor Abbott understands that Texas families deserve better. Under his leadership, the Texas Legislature is poised to pass one of the most significant school choice measures in our state’s history. This is a monumental step forward, ensuring that Texas remains a leader in educational freedom and opportunity.

To my fellow East Texans: this is our moment. It’s time to stand up for parents’ rights, students’ futures, and the fundamental principle that education should serve the child—not the system. Education Savings Accounts will give families the ability to choose what’s bes for their children, and that’s a win for everyone in the Lone Star State.

Let’s get this done. Texas kids deserve nothing less.
