LuckyU Rescue seeks land in Queen City
A local animal rescue group has shifted its building plans, opting to pursue a new construction project in Queen City rather than moving into the Brooks Hospital building. The costs associated with the initial building project far outweigh the benefits of the property. The group is hoping to donate the hospital to the City of Atlanta.
The rescue is currently negotiating the purchase of an eight-acre plot of land off Highway 59 in Queen City. Once the land acquisition is finalized, the group plans to build a new facility with the help of Mueller Steel Buildings. They qualify for a free 40-by-60-foot building from Mueller upon closing on the land. Electricians, plumbers, and contractors have already been selected for the project.
The land purchase is estimated at $100,000, and the rescue is actively seeking donations to cover the remaining construction costs, including building assembly, concrete work, and kennel system installation.
Currently, the rescue has 40 cats and dogs in foster care. Food is a constant need, with the fosters consuming approximately three large bags of food per week in one foster home alone. The group is also seeking volunteers for events and marketing. An open meeting will be held this Friday, February 13, at 6 p.m. at the Starbucks in Atlanta for those interested in volunteering. Several attendees will receive training on listing animals on Petfinder.
The organization has focused on networking with other area rescues, collaborating to find permanent homes for animals and sharing best practices. They have also brought on Chad Crumpler as their personal dog trainer. Crumpler is opening a new training facility in Bloomburg but will also have dedicated space at the new shelter once it opens.
An adoption event will be held this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tractor Supply in Atlanta.
