Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving Cass County
Cass County is a beautiful place to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday.
The leaves have begun to take on their fall colors and the temperature is cool and mild. It’s a great time to get outside and take a walk around the trails at Atlanta State Park, the Atlanta Sportsplex walking trails, or the Linden City park trails. Daingerfield State park is another great place to spend the afternoon outdoors.
As we officially begin the holiday season in Cass County it is a great time to reflect on all we have to be thankful for living in “Smalltown, USA.”
As you make your way around the county, take a look at Linden’s Courthouse square and enjoy the Lions Club-led Christmas tree project. Drop by the Cass County Justice Center on Highway 8 and check out all the wonderful decorations each office puts up each year. It’s a great time of the year to be in Cass County.
Atlanta State Park sits on 1,475 acres along the southern shores of Wright Patman Lake in Cass County. The lake is in northeast Texas, southwest of Texarkana.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversaw the impoundment of the Sulphur River to create the lake. Construction of the lake’s dam began in 1948 and finished in 1953.
The lake covers 20,300 acres with an average depth of 7.6 feet. It has 170 miles of shoreline. The lake was originally known as Lake Texarkana.
It was renamed in the 1970s to honor Wright Patman, a longtime congressman from East Texas. Texas entered into a lease with the Department of the Army in 1954 to establish a public park on the lake’s shore.

Family Traditions
I was a teenager when my father made the observation one Thanksgiving that nobody in the family really cared for turkey.
After all, we only ate it once a year. But we all loved enchiladas! This changed the course of our family tradition forever. We now always have a Tex-Mex option.
The last several years it has included Vickey’s Tamales and homemade salsa. The holiday season can be difficult for many as we mourn the loss of loved ones and cling to old traditions that may feel somehow incomplete without them here.
The holidays can also be a stressful time dealing with family who have differing opinions on everything from politics to potatoes.
Don’t be afraid to set a new tradition or abandon an old one that no longer fits. The only constant in life is change. In that, I am thankful, because I still don’t care much for turkey! Happy Thanksgiving!
