AHS band lassoes silver at state marching contest
With the precision of a sharpshooter and the spirit of the Wild West, the Atlanta High School band rode into San Antonio and captured a silver medal at the UIL State Marching Band Contest on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Performing their show titled “Wanted,” the band not only wowed the judges but also secured the highest finish in school history with a wellearned second place. This follows last year’s trailblazing third-place win, marking only the second time the band has ever brought home a state medal.
Band director Keith Sanders couldn’t be prouder of his band’s performance.
“We had a good prelims run Wednesday morning at 10:15. We had a couple of minor issues, but it was their first time in the dome, and it’s just a different environment for them,” Sanders said. “After shaking off the initial nerves, the kids made noticeable improvements, musically and visually, in the finals. We were thrilled to represent our region, especially since all three medalists came from Region 4.”
Reflecting on their journey, drum major Makenzie Lampshire described the experience as a true adventure.
“The state band trip of 2024 was a journey marked by moments of intense pride, focus and unwavering support,” Mackenzie said. “For some, it was the final ride—a bittersweet farewell to years of hard work—while for others, it was the first taste of victory earned through countless hours of practice and teamwork. I am incredibly proud and deeply honored to be a part of this band I call family.”
Atlanta ISD Superintendent Jason Harris tipped his hat to the band for their hard work and dedication.
“The students and directors have shown what can be achieved when passion meets perseverance,” Harris said. “Their performance not only brought honor to our district but also served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when you pour your heart into something. We couldn’t be prouder.”
As the band members ride off into the sunset of another successful season, plans are already underway for next year’s show. Sanders hinted that they’re eager to build on their momentum.
“We’re already talking about the possibilities of what next year brings,” Sanders said. “It’s all about buying into the show early, making those necessary changes, and just getting better.”
