AMS Rabbs sweep Sabine Cardinals
Atlanta Middle School’s football teams swept Sabine last week and nearly had three shutout games.
B game
Atlanta 18 Sabine 0
Cordemion Roquemore scored on a 78-yard run, Alex Bishop added a 60yard run and Michael Kassens scored on an 85-yard interception return. Adrian Jolly, Jace Phillips, and Aiden Turner were defensive standouts.
7A Game
Atlanta 38 Sabine 0
First Quarter - On the opening drive, Zay Smith dashed 57 yards for the score to open up the game. Sabine put together a nice drive to finish the quarter; down 6-0.
Second Quarter – The Rabbs’ defense stopped Sabine on fourth down but the Rabbit offense couldn’t get it going on its next drive.
Janson Wylie sacked the Sabine QB on fourth down and forced a fumble which was recovered by Dennis Gulley. A few plays later, Cruz Crosby found Jayden Moore wide open up the left sideline for the score.
Marquez Anderson caught the 2-point pass to make it 14-0 Rabbits. After another defensive stand, Crosby found Wylie in the flats for a huge gain, deep into Sabine territory.
On the next play, Smith dashed 20 yards for another score. Anderson caught the 2-point pass again, making it 22-0.
Third Quarter - On the opening drive of the second half, Sabine went for it on fourth down in their own territory and the Atlanta defense made a big stop.
On the ensuing play, J’kyron Anderson took the reverse, rolled left, and found Crosby open for the 20-yard score. Smith added the 2-point run to increase Atlanta’s lead to 30-0.
The Rabbit defense once again stopped Sabine on fourth down and on the first play of the next drive for Atlanta, Smith corralled a high snap and slashed through the left side for a 53-yard scamper. Crosby added the 2-point run to put the Rabbs ahead 38-0.
Fourth Quarter - The clock ran for the entirety of the final quarter. Bennett Price picked up a Sabine fumble and returned it 65 yards deep into Cardinal territory as time expired.
The seventh grade Rabbs move to 4-1 on the season.
8A Game
Atlanta 42 Sabine 7
First Quarter - On the opening drive, Sabine’s defense made the Rabbs earn every yard.
Brayden Thompson was able to find KD Howell in the flats for a big gain deep into Sabine territory. On the next play, Thompson threw a strike up the seam to Kelvin Roberson from 20 yards out to go ahead 6-0.
Sabine put together a nice drive that moved into the second quarter. Second Quarter - The Atlanta defense once again proved why they are a force, stuffing Sabine inside the 5-yard line. Levi Cook had a huge sack on fourth down.
Howell got the Rabbs going on the next drive with a huge run down inside the Sabine 40. Gaven Bumphus had two big plays, a jet sweep for a first down, and then caught a pass from Thompson in the flats for a 20-yard score which put Atlanta up 12-0.
Atlanta’s defense forced a Sabine punt on its next drive and then Roberson got the Rabbs going with a tough run into Cardinal territory.
On the next play, Roberson reversed the ball to Thompson, who launched a big-time pass to a wide-open Bumphus for another Rabbit touchdown from 34 yards out. The score was set at 18-0 after the score.
It was the same story on the next Sabine drive as the Rabbit defense forced another punt.
Bumphus received it, and made multiple defenders miss en route to a big return into Sabine territory. A couple of plays later, Thompson scrambled around, rolled left, and found a wide-open Roberson in the endzone for a 27-yard score.
Thompson added a 2-point run to increase Atlanta’s lead to 26-0. Third Quarter - Sabine put together a nice opening drive and scored its first TD of the game. After the PAT the Rabbit lead was cut to 26-7.
This wouldn’t last long as Mekai Martin and Thompson both put together big runs behind a dominant offensive line, to set the Rabbs up inside the 5-yard line.
Roberson punched it in on the next play and Howell added the 2-point run to increase the Rabbs’ lead to 34-7.
Sabine was forced to punt again on its next drive and on the ensuing Rabbit set, Roberson split the defense, ran over a defender and raced 62 yards for another touchdown. Howell added a 2-point run to set the score at 42-7.
Fourth Quarter - The clock ran the entire fourth quarter. Martin added a huge touchdown run, negated by a penalty as time expired.
The eighth grade Rabbs move to 5-0 on the season. AMS football will be back in action this Thursday night, in a huge matchup against the Liberty-Eylau Leopards.
The B game starts at 4 p.m., followed by 7A and 8A.
