Voting ID information
Under Texas law, voters who possess one of the seven acceptable forms of photo ID must present that ID at the polls when voting in person. Voters who do not possess and cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven approved forms of photo ID may fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration (RID) at the polls and present an alternative form of ID, such as a utility bill, bank statement, government check, or a voter registration certificate.
Countywide Voting
Voting is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. It’s your chance to have a say in how your community and country are governed. Ensuring convenient access to voting is essential to making sure more voices can be heard and represented. Countywide voting reduces confusion at the polls by allowing any Cass County registered voter to vote at any polling location in Cass County.
Last September, the Texas Secretary of State accepted Cass County’s application to participate in the countywide polling place program for the November 7, 2023 constitutional amendment election. Cass County’s application to the Secretary of State followed a six month long process of planning, compiling information, conducting public hearings and gathering input from the public. Cass County exceeded the minimum public meeting requirements by holding four public hearings across the county to discuss the potential for countywide voting. Following the successful status of the initial trial run of countywide voting, the county was approved for future elections.
Countywide voting ensures Cass County citizens can vote at whatever polling location is most convenient to them on election day. All early voting locations are open to all Cass County voters as well during early voting. Voters don’t have to worry about going to the wrong polling place and being turned away. Their vote can be cast at any polling location in Cass County.
Additionally, citizens in Hughes Springs will be pleased that the Cass County Commissioners Court also decided to add an additional early voting location there. These two changes should result in improved voter turnout, less confusion at the polls, and the ability for more people to participate in the election process.
Roosevelt was Right
President Teddy Roosevelt is credited with saying “Democracy doesn’t work, you have to work it!” That has perhaps never been so true. As citizens, we focus on a thousand other things instead of our own form of government. However, our government demands its citizens take their civic responsibility seriously. It is more than just voting. It is serving on advisory boards, volunteering your time and expertise, communicating with your duly elected representatives so they can more accurately represent you. It is also being informed enough to discern truth from spin and influence operations of foreign entities. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, we have “a Republic, if you can keep it.” This requires diligence to keep our Republic form of Democracy functioning as it was designed by the founders.
