Clovis A. and Louise Biggs Martin
Clovis, Louise and Barbara Ann Martin not quite two years old left Goldthwaite, Texas, where Clovis was a butcher in the Piggly Wiggly Store moving to Atlanta, Texas in January 1937.
Clovis was the meat cutter (butcher) at the C & R Food Store for Mr. Jenkins, who Clovis had worked for in the market before Mr. Jenkins moved from Coleman to Atlanta. The C & R. Food Store was located where Walker Drug Store is now.
By 1939 we had started the Martin’s Pie Shop in Queen City. By 1940 we had moved to Atlanta and started a small “bakery in the Hudson Grocery Store across from the Post Office. From this humble beginning, and lots of hard work our business grew into Martin’s Grocery , Bakery and Seed Store, which we operated in, Atlanta with the help of from 5 to 15 employees.
Clovis A. Martin was born 31 August 1911 near Manchester, Red River County, Texas, the son of Jason Edward and Janie Mozella Wallace Martin. It was in Coleman, Texas that Clovis met and married Alta Louise Biggs, the daughter of Neal Little and Lela Annis Smith Biggs.
Having been in business many years in Atlanta, we met and appreciated many wonderful people, our customers, and friends.
We had two daughters; Barbara Ann was born 9 February 1935 and Carolyn Irene born 15 February 1949. Both girls received their education from kindergarten thru high school in Atlanta, Barbara went to Fort Worth to Brantley Draughn Business School and married Billy Charles Langley. Carolyn went to the University of Texas at Arlington, then to D.T. in Austin where she met and married Glen Martin Castlebury.
Clovis and family were members of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta.
Clovis was a member of the Atlanta Masonic Blue Lodge, a Shriner, and other Masonic Orders. Served as Worshipful Master of Atlanta Lodge 1944-1945, the same year he and Louise were Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Clovis, died 2 July 1968, Atlanta and buried in Pine Crest Cemetery. Surely a good man’s life lives on for those who knew and loved him. His good deeds, his kindness and consideration for others made Clovis a friend to all who knew him.
Louise was appointed Organizing Regent 19 April 1975 in Washington, D.C. by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Trammel’s Trace Chapter, NSDAR of Atlanta was organized 8 December 1975 Louise has served as president of the Cass County Genealogical Society 1981 and 1982.
Barbara and Bill have two daughters and one son. Carolyn and Glen have one son. BARBARA ANN MARTIN LANGLEY Barbara Ann Martin the oldest daughter of Clovis A. and Louise Biggs Martin, born 9 February 1935, Kiomatia, Red River County, Texas.
Barbara and parents moved to Atlanta, Texas in January 1937. Her education began in Atlanta in the kindergarten with Miss Wilma Salmon the teacher, through high school, with six years in the Atlanta High School Band. After high school, she worked a few months as telephone operator here in Atlanta, then going to Fort Worth to Brantley Draughn Business School. Barbara joined the First Baptist Church in Atlanta in 1944.
Barbara married Billy Charles Langley of Fort Worth, 2 October 1954 by Rev. Wilson Wood, pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta.
Barbara and Bill have lived mostly in Fort Worth, with the exception of about 2 or 3 years when he was employed by the Texas Highway Department of Atlanta.
Bill was born 6 December 1931 Fort Worth, and had 12 years Naval Reserve with 2 years of active duty in the Korean Conflict. Bill went back to school to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree Cum Laude, and Master of Science Degree North Texas State University, Denton and Doctor of Education at East Texas State University, Commerce. He has been an instructor ten years at Tarrant County Junior College, Fort Worth at the same time was the author of four Technical Textbooks for high school and college level, published by Prentice Hall Co. and Reston Publishing Company. Bill has retired from teaching and writing text books, now has seven books published and continues to write. Barbara and family are members of First Baptist Church, Saginaw, TX, also she and Bill are members of Lake Worth O.E.S. and she is member of Mary Isham Keith Chapter NSDAR.
Barbara and Bill have three children: 1. Debra (Debbie) Dianne Langley born 25 March 1956, Fort Worth, married 29 March 1975, Larry Leonard McLauchlin, Fort Worth, a young man who climbed the ladder to success. He is manager over many of the Winn Dixie Stores in Texas.
2. Billy Charles Langley, Jr. was born 11 December 1959, Fort Worth. Billy, a star football player his senior year, playing position of half-back, and gained over 1,100 yards for the season 1977-78 school year for Saginaw-Boswell Pioneers team. The Pioneers proved to be too much for the famed Atlanta Rabbits in AAA State quarter final action, Friday night, 25 November 1977 at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium with a winning score 24-0. Billy is not married and lives in Fort Worth.
3. Brenda Kay Langley born 25 December 1963, Fort Worth, finished Bos-well High School and married 12 June 1982 to Kenneth Ellis and lives in Fort Worth.
CAROLYN IRENE MARTIN CASTLEBURY Carolyn Martin, the younger daughter of Clovis A. and Louise Biggs Martin, born 15 February 1949, Atlanta, Texas.
Mrs. Mary K. Sheppard kindergarten teacher for Carolyn’s age group. She finished high school in Atlanta, being involved in many activities. She was baptized 15 May 1958, First Baptist Church, Atlanta. She attended 1965 National Girl Scout Round-Up at Farragut, Idaho, with 10,000 Girl Scouts and Staff from around the world. Selected by Conifer Girl Scout Council of Texarkana, U.S.A.. She was high cookie salesperson of Conifer Council, an active Girl Scout since 2nd grade. She received 20-year membership pin in 1976, awarded by Lone Star Girl Scout Council, Austin, Texas where she is a Camp Counselor and Trainer and Neighbor Chairman over several troops and 1981 selected as a Board member of Lone Star Council.
Carolyn a State winner in the National Piano Auditions 1956-1961.
Studied piano twelve years and organ six. Played in the Atlanta High School Band five years during which time the Band won Sweepstakes Awards. 1967 Senior Class Most Talented Girl and 1967 Atlanta High School Band Sweetheart. Pianist for the Stage Band three years, 1967 Arion Music Award selected member All Star Band at Brownwood Stage Band Festival 1967-Received Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Texas at Austin 1972.
Carolyn married 3 January 1971 Glen Martin Castlebury of Austin, Texas in First Baptist Church, Atlanta, by Rev. Wilson Wood. Since 1970 Carolyn, known as Carol to friends in Austin, has been employed in the fields of journalism and State government, for the Austin American Statesman newspaper and as a Legislative staff member in the Texas Legislature. She is an active member of Thankful Hubbard Chapter NSDAR.
Glen attended the University of Texas and a member of Sigma Delta Chi Fraternity. He is a winner of eight Headliner Awards for excellence in newspaper reporting, and other Journalism Awards. He covered political tours since 1964. Assigned to the Capitol Staff 1968 several years in that capacity. He is now associated with the State Tax Comptroller’s Office in Austin.
Carolyn and Glen have one son, Jason Martin Castlebury, born 19 October 1978.
