AMS Rabbits topple Sabine on homecoming night

On Oct. 5, the Atlanta Middle School football programs battled Sabine.

The B teams played a really good game. In the 7B game, Coredemian Roquemore had a 45-yard touchdown run, and Cole Hanner threw a 35-yard completion to Mason Gibson. In the 8B game Jayden McCullough caught a 40-yard TD pass from Jacobie Sertuche, Sertuche also had a rushing touchdown, Braylon Cook also made some big plays.

7A Atlanta 42 Sabine 14

First Quarter- on the first play from scrimmage, Mekai Martin stripped the ball away, and Riley Sutton recovered to give Atlanta great field position. Kelvin Roberson capitalized on the turnover with an 18-yard scamper for a touchdown. 6-0.

Sabine put together a nice drive on the ensuing possession, but once again the Rabbs forced a turnover, Jaxon Durmon punched the ball out, and Jaiden Finley recovered. The Rabbs were unable to capitalize this time, having to punt it away, but it was blocked. Sabine scored a couple plays later to go up 8-6 after the 2-point run.

Second Quarter-KD Howell broke multiple tackles on his way into the endzone for a 13-yard run to put the Rabbs back on top. On the ensuing drive, Roberson went up and intercepted a Sabine pass, and put together a nice return all the way inside the 20yard line. A couple of plays later, Brayden Thompson found Gavin Bumphus in the endzone for an 18-yard score. Roberson added a 2-point run to make it 20-8.

On the kickoff, Henry Puckett wrapped the return man up, and ripped the ball out, forcing another Sabine turnover. Thompson’s next pass was batted in the air by the Sabine defense, but he was able to catch it, and run around the edge for a big gain down inside the 10-yard line. The next play, Thompson scrambled right, and raced into the endzone for another Atlanta touchdown. Bumphus added the 2-point run. 28-8 Rabbs.

Third Quarter- the Rabbs were unable to score on their opening drive, and Sabine put together a nice drive to cut the lead to 28-14. The score would stay the same, as the Rabbs took over for their second drive of the half.

Fourth Quarter- Thompson takes the QB keeper way down inside the redzone to set the Rabbs up nicely. A couple plays later, Roberson barrels into the endzone from 9 yards out to extend the lead to 34-14. Atlanta’s defense got another stop, and Finley sliced around the edge on the Rabbs’ next drive for a 12-yard score. Roberson added the two-point run to make it 42-14 Atlanta.

8A Atlanta 40 Sabine 30

First Quarter- the Rabbs defense forced a punt on Sabine’s opening drive. on the Rabbs first play, Noah Sheffield found Dre Simmons on a nice pass play for 22 yards to put Atlanta in Sabine territory. A couple plays later, Simmons dashed through the defense for a 32-yard run. 6-0. on the ensuing drive, Ean Riojas came off the edge, hit the Sabine QB, forcing a fumble, recovered by Robert Ammons. a few plays later, Simmons rolled right, and found TJ Rainey in the endzone, who made a diving catch for the touchdown 12-0.

Second Quarter- after another Sabine fumble, recovered again by Ammons, Jamario Crawford sprinted around the left end for a 23-yard run. 18-0. On Sabine’s next drive, they drove the ball deep into Atlanta territory, but the Rabbs defense stood tall. the score at the half remained 18-0.

Third Quarter- Sabine recovered the onside kick and answered quickly to cut the lead to 18-8. On the next Atlanta drive, the ball was fumbled, Simmons picked up the ball, breaks multiple tackles, somehow stays on his feet, and takes it all the way in for the score from 66 yards out. to extend the lead to 24-8. The Rabbs recovered an onside kick but fumbled the ball on the next play. Sabine capitalized to cut the lead to 24-16. Sabine stopped the Rabbs on Fourth down on their next drive, and answered the next play on a big run to tie the game at 24-24. Atlanta turned the ball over once again on the next drive. giving Sabine good field position. Sabine puts together a lengthy drive, and took the lead 30-24.

Fourth Quarter- TJ Rainey got the drive going with a 13 yard run on first down. On the next play Simmons takes it around the left edge behind Rainey, cuts it back and takes it in from 37 yards out to make it a 30-30 game. the Rabbs took the lead on a QB sneak for the 2-point run. 32-30. Sabine put together a good drive, but tried a deep ball that didn’t fool the Rabbs, Simmons picked it off and takes it 80 yards to the house for another score. Hammons drug multiple defenders into the endzone to make it a 2-score game 40-30. The Rabbs defense came up with another stop, and the Rabbs offense picked up two first downs, and were able to take a knee and run out the clock.
