Philippine man finds community, runs for cause
Philippine native Kevin Matnog has found a fresh way to introduce himself to America.
He looks online -- especially Facebook -- for community activities he can be involved with.
“People coming together for a purpose, that’s what I look for,” Matnog said Saturday as he warmed up for a run through the woods to help Atlanta’s second annual Trail Grinder benefit run.
“Something that’s healthy and helpful at the same time,” he continued. “It’s what I did at home in the Philippines, and now I want to do here. Be involved with the community.”
In Atlanta, Matnog is a nurse for a local nursing home. He came here 10 months ago from the Philippines to live and be settled in America.
“I find it easy to get involved over Facebook. It’s doing things we love, that’s what I like,” he said.
Matnog’s efforts have a second purpose. Since he is a nurse in the health field, he is glad to help with the Trail Grinder’s purpose, that of helping to make an impact on the rare disease Superficial Siderosis.
As defined by Wikipedia on the Internet, Superficial Siderosis is a disease of the central nervous system resulting from chronic iron deposition in neuronal tissues. First discovered in 1908, the illness has been diagnosed through MRI technology. It remains a rare disease.
The Trail Grinder run is hosted by the Caffe’ Crema business in Atlanta. Activities to increase awareness and research are part of the 501 (C)(3) non-profit effort entitled Superficial Siderosis Research Alliance.
