Two separate fatalities on Hwy 77 last weekend
Two separate accidents were reported by DPS that ended in fatalities last weekend. The first happened in the early morning hours of September 11 when Karen E Wommack, female, 55, of Naples, TX hit a car on the side of the road. According to DPS, “preliminary investigation indicates that vehicle 1 was traveling westbound on SH 77. Vehicle 1 failed to drive in a single lane and struck a trailer that was disabled in the shoulder. This crash remains under investigation with no additional information available.” The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. She was driving a 2020 Nissan Rogue and was pronounced by Justice of the Peace Kimberly Cullins.
The second crash occurred on the 10th at 9:10 p.m. The car/pedestrian accident occurred when Kevin McCasland, 60, was driving on Hwy 77 just N of CR 2460, when Shauna Savell, 31, of Fouke, Arkansas, attempted to cross the highway. McCasland was driving a 2023 Chevy Silverado. The vehicle immediately stopped according to one of the neighbors who was at the scene.
According to an unnamed witness, “she had her car parked at our house and was visiting a friend across the street and it happened when she was coming back across to get her car to move it to the house she was visiting. This was all literally directly in front of our house on Hwy 77 West almost one mile from the intersection.” The driver was coming in from town.
The witness at the scene said they knew the family growing up and are asking for prayers for family and friends. There were no charges.
