Willaim Green Curry Hampton
William Green Curry Hampton was born October 30, 1839 in Crawford County, Georgia. He was the second child of John Hampton Jr. and his wife, Mary. W.G.C. Hampton was one of several members of the extensive Hampton family to reside in Cass Co, Texas.
W.G.C. Hampton’s grandfather was John Hampton Sr. He was a tailor by trade and had a large family in Crawford Co, Georgia. Among his sons were: John Jr., William, and Phillip Hampton. During the late 1850”s, both John Jr. and William moved their families to Louisiana and lived in Desoto and Sabine counties near Mansfield. Shortly after, John Jr. passed away.
During the Civil War, W.G.C., his younger brother James Josiah, and their cousin, James Lemuel Hampton (William’s son) all served in the Confederate forces and each later received a Texas Confederate Pension for their service. W.G.C. enlisted in Company B of the Consolidated Crescent Regiment Louisiana Infantry. James Josiah (Joe) served with Company A in the 12th Louisiana, and James Lemuel enlisted in Company B of the 18th Louisiana Infantry.
In 1865 after the war ended, all three Hamptons moved to Cass Co, Texas. All three were married within a month and a half of each other. William Greene Curry Hampton married Mary Jane Belts on January 3, 1867 in Cass Co. James Josiah Hampton married her sister, Francis Elizabeth Belts on January 8, 1867. James Lemuel Hampton married Sarah E. Haynes on February 20, 1867 in Cass Co.
Other family members eventually followed. While there were other non-related Hamptons in Cass Co, the vast majority of Hamptons found in Cass and Morris counties descended from this family. W.G.C.’s mother and her youngest children came after the war. Mary Hampton died, and her estate was probated in December of 1868. His younger brother, Robert J. Franklin Hampton came with their mother. James Lemuel’s younger brother, Adolpus W. Hampton also eventually moved to Cass County near Marietta. Even their uncle, Phillip, eventually settled there. Some information about these family members follows: Phillip Hampton was born in South Carolina on November 29,1822. He was a bachelor schoolteacher when he came to Cass Co. On October 4, 1882, he married Cassandra Brown. Phillip died on April 2, 1915 and is buried at Cornett Cemetery.
James Lemuel Hampton was born in January of 1843. He and his family lived in Cass Co. until 1885 at which time they moved near Wolfe City in Hunt Co, Texas. He died on September 26, 1916. Census records indicate that he and his wife Sarah had 10 children. Seven of those children were: Elizabeth, Ida, George L, William A, Junetta, Myrtle, and Elna Hampton.
Adolpus W. Hampton, J.L.’s brother, was born in March of 1851 and died in 1930. He is buried in Oakridge Cemetery in Marietta, Cass Co, Texas. He married Rhoda T. Eaton on December 14, 1893. They had several children, among them were James, Nettie, Arlen, Ardis, William, Laura, and Elvira Hampton. James Josiah (Joe) Hampton was born July 18,1844 in Crawford Co, Georgia and died in Naples, Morris Co, Texas on January 10,1916. He is buried in Cornett Cemetery in Cass Co He and wife Francis had 12 children: Madison W, Lemuel Victor, James Archie, Herbert Leon, Orah Talulah, John Robert, Claud, Stella Nevada. Mary Nannie, Jodie Marvin, Thomas Fred, and Vera Marie Hampton.
Robert J. Franklin Hampton was born August 14, 1853 in Crawford Co, Georgia and died August 6, 1924. He is buried at Cornett Cemetery in Cass Co. He married Elizabeth S. Hicks in Cass Co, Texas on March 4, 1878. They had 8 children, 7 of them are: Samuel Mordecai (Mock), Robert James, Alma Lee, Ephriam Hicks, Philip, George William, and Peter Franklin (Peet) Hampton. William Green Curry Hampton and his wife Mary Jane had 11 children born in Cass County. 1. Marry Mintoria Hampton was born February 11.1868 and died August 13, 1872 She is buried in Cornett Cemetery. 2. Orry Meeta Hampton was born January 11, 1870 and died along with her sister on August 13, 1872. She is also buried at Cornett.
3. William Wyatt Hampton was born June 16,1872 and died at Avinger in Cass Co. on January 14, 1912. He is buried at Avinger Cemetery. He married Mary Emma Saunders on October 4, 1905 in Morris Co, Texas. Their children were: Sam, Vernon Richard, and Lemuel Wyatt Hampton 4. John Walter Hampton was born November 16, 1873 and died August 18, 1929 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He is buried at Cornett Cemetery in Cass Co. He was never married.
5. Felix Eugene Hampton was born January 4, 1876 and died June 18, 1923 in Cass Co. He is also buried at Cornett Cemetery. He was never married.
6. Lola Ellenora Hampton was born September 29, 1877 and died April 24, 1926. She is buried in Cornett Cemetery. She married Oscar C. Beard in Morris Co, Texas on December 20, 1896. They had no children before his untimely death.
7. Arthur Curry Hampton was born February 9, 1879 and died on May 7, 1923 in Howard Co, Texas. He married Emma Golden on October 7, 1900 in Morris Co, Texas. They had seven children including: Gillie N, William Wyatt, Exie, Wynona, Vglton, Cleston and Mary Jane (Waple) Hampton.
8. Flora Alma Hampton was born March 1, 1881 and died December 14, 1914. She is buried at Cornett Cemetery. She married Norris Quitman Robison on December 4, 1904 in Morris Co, Texas. They had 3 children: Doris Ida, Audrey Zeddie, and Clois Quitman Robison, 9. Charley Belts Hampton was born February 13, 1883 and died in Naples, Morris Co, Texas on August 22,1958. He is buried in Comett Cemetery. He married Minnie Ola Cox on June 10,1916. They had 4 children: Charlie Winston, Troyce Cox, Maude Elnora, and Mary Catherine Hampton.
10. Fannie Elleanor (Elena) Hampton was born May 31, 1885 and died December 18, 1965. She is buried in Cornett Cemetery. She married William Henry Blankenship on February 2, 1908 in Cass Co. They had three children: Florence Enola, Carroll D, and Frances Valera Blankenship.
11. Myrtle Alba Hampton was born February 3, 1888 and died November 26, 1969. She is buried in Edna, Jackson Co, Texas. She married Ira Thomas Taylor Sr. on August 18, 1912. They had five children: Nowana Adelle, , Minnie Leota, Jewell Maurice, Althareta, and Ira Thomas Taylor, Jr.
W.G.C. Hampton farmed land southwest of Marietta. He was a member of the Cornett Methodist Church and of the Marietta Masonic Lodge. He was Justice of the Peace for Precinct #3 from 1903 through 1910. His popularity was such that he was unopposed for his last two terms.
Mary Jane Hampton died on Christmas Day, 1894 and was buried at Cornett Cemetery in Cass Co, Texas. William Green Curry Hampton never remarried. He died on December 13, 1915 and was laid to rest beside his beloved wife at Cornett.
