Louis G. Holcomb

Lewis (Louis) G. Holcomb, “born January 27, 1?83 in Surry County, North Carolina, died September 21, 1860, in Cass County, Texas married May 11, 1808 in Surry County North Carolina, Clarinda Johnson, born October 19, 1784, died June 28, 1841 in Cass County, Texas. Lewis G. Holcomb was the son of Lawrence and Priscilla Holcomb. His ancestors can be traced to one William Holcomb, who emigrated to Virginia on October 12, 1680.

Lewis G, Holcomb left Surry County, North Carolina, moving first to Maury County, Tennessee and then to Monroe County, Mississippi, where he was enumerated in the 1830 Census.

Lewis G. Holcomb and his family moved to the present Cass County, Texas, arriving on December 10, 1839, according to his sworn statement before the Board of Land Commissioners, Republic of Texas, Paschal District. After proving by law that he was entitled to 640 acres of land, a Third Class “Conditional” Grant Certificate #18, was issued on September 20, 1841. On November 19, 1849, he was issued an “Unconditional” Third Class Grant, #94 for 640 acres. This land was described as being on the Sulphur Pork of the Red River, about 19i miles Northeast of the present town of Linden, TX.

The sons, of Lewis G. and Clarinda Holcomb also received Republic of Texas Land Grants. These grants were also on the Sulphur Fork of the Red River, and this settlement was then, and still is, known as “Holcomb’s Bluff”. The children of Lewis G. Holcomb and Clarinda Johnson Holcomb who have been identified are as follows: 1. Lucinda Holcomb born 1809, in Surry County, North Carolina, died August 13, 1842 in Cass County, Texas, married January 28, 1827 as his first wife, Thomas Jefferson Foster, born December 23, 1809, died May 3, 1901.

2. Sarah G. Holcomb born June 15, 1810, Surry County, North Carolina, died April 1, 1877 in Bell County, TX, married June 24, 1841, Pharo Kitchens, born January 17, 1803, died February 17, 1853 3. Isibela Holcomb married Samuel Wilson. 4. Robert P. Holcomb born about 1812, in North Carolina, died prior to i860, married as his second wife, Parthenia Wilborn, widow of K.S. Wilborn.

5. M. Berry Johnson Holcomb died May 1855, married Sara (Sarah) Ann Hancock, on October 28, 1850.

6. James L. Holcomb died about 1840, intestate, “leaving no wife or children”, according to Probate Book D, Page 420, Cass County, Texas.

7. Anderson Ferdinand Holcomb born about 1817, in Tennessee, died November 23, 1851 in Jefferson (then Cass County), Texas, married Sarah Ann Graham, who died January 28, 1882. Anderson Ferdinand Holcomb was a gunsmith, a Justice of the Peace of Cass County, Texas and was appointed in January, 1849, along with Benjamin Kimble to lay out lots for the town of Linden, Texas. As the town grew, he was paid $40.00, in 1851 for laying out additional lots. In the same year, he was paid $200.00 for making a map of the County of Cass, Texas. Anderson Ferdinand Holcomb died intestate, leaving no issue. The settlement of his estate, per Probate Records of Cass County, Texas, name as heirs, his wife and his sisters and brothers and their heirs.
