Rotary

It seems pretty obvious that I need to be thinking about Thanksgiving as I sit to write this article. Each of us really ought to take more than just a moment to get our minds around the thought of being thankful for all our blessings. Too often we focus on what we aren’t, what we don’t have, why we aren’t….(fill in the blank), etc.

But... Maybe we need to turn that around and contemplate all we have been blessed to be and have. Let me tell you a little story. Eleven years ago last week, 2 adorable little puppies were born. But I didn’t know about them and had no plans to adopt them. In fact, we replaced our carpet in the house and were so proud of that “almost” white carpet. Then, two months later, two little puppies called our house their home. No big deal. It was a decision my husband and I made (perhaps I was more delusional than he!). Never having been a puppy owner before, we had accidents. I didn’t know how to determine which was the guilty one, and they ended up committing this crime often. Soon, that carpet didn’t look so great! The puppies were still kinda cute. I was getting a bit frustrated. Carpet cleaners came and went and the carpet wasn’t looking any better.

Then... A friend told us about a new product and it actually worked. Now the carpet looks great and the dogs seemed to have learned what they were to do about their bodily needs. And am I ever THANKFUL! Even though I know there will be mysterious wet spots in the future, but I’ve got my handy product to come to the rescue. And those dogs have become great companions who ensure that I get my two mile walks in during the week. And I’m THANKFUL to be able to walk that in the brisk mornings we’re having.

Stop and think about the many friends you have. Yes, some may drive you crazy, but you love them and enjoy their friendships. In Rotary we learn that we can work together, having fun, and enjoy a whole new world of friendships. Literally! Last week we met a fellow Rotarian who’s originally from Colombia. We shared an immediate friendship and realized we were both at the Rotary International convention in Houston in June. Of course, we didn’t see each other there, but we shared so many Rotary stories. We learned a little more about her country. I’m thankful for both new and old friends.

Anyone is welcome to join us the third Thursday evening, 6 pm, at Luigi’s in Atlanta and we’ll happily offer our friendship as we share a meal and learn about each other…. and what Rotary’s all about. We will be picking up trash by Queen City High School Nov. 30 and enjoying seeing children “shop with a cop” at Walmart in December. What fun to see the sparkle in those children’s eyes!

So, truly, slow down and be thankful this month. I’m sure God would love to hear our thanks as much as our requests! Call me if you have any Rotary questions. (903) 691-9717
