Dog sniffs out gun in teen’s vehicle
A 17-year-old was arrested Thursday at Hughes Springs High School after a loaded handgun was found in his locked vehicle, according to a district report.
The incident happened just before 9:00 a.m., Nov. 17.
“The gun was found as the result of a random search conducted by a contracted drug dog and handler,” the district reported.
School administrators stated Hughes Springs Independent School District Police Chief Wayne Mosley and the dog’s handler took immediate possession of the handgun.
A release signed by Superintendent Sarah Dildine, High School Principal Brian Nation and HSISD Chief Mosley said the teenage student will be “dealt with appropriately in accordance with Texas law,” but no other information would be released about the student to preserve his confidentiality.
Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy confirmed the 17–year-old male was arrested by HSISD Chief Mosley for having a gun on school property.
“The school did have a dog there and the dog is trained to find drugs, alcohol and firearms,” Kennedy said. “The dog alerted on a vehicle and they called the student out of class.” Kennedy said the handgun was found in the locked vehicle beneath the driver’s seat and that no drugs or alcohol were found. Dogs can not only smell out drugs and alcohol, but gunpowder, too.
