Rabbits bow out of football playoffs
Atlanta faced off against Winnsboro in the first round of the playoffs.
The Rabbits scored first but couldn’t hold Winnsboro off enough and fell 28-14.
In the first quarter, Atlanta opened up its first drive with a nice 23-yard pass from quarterback Peyton Harrison to wideout Jayden Riley.
Unfortunately the drive stalled a few plays later and the Rabbs punted the ball away.
Atlanta’s defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense took over at the 27-yard line after the punt. It took one snap and one play for the Rabbs to get on the scoreboard first as Markeylin Batton torched the Winnsboro defense on a 73-yard TD run. Harrison hit Kam Dickerson, who made a nice dive to catch the ball, for the 2-point play and Atlanta was up 8-0 with 9:23 left in the first quarter.
Winnsboro scored at the 6:07 mark and tied the game up at 8-8 after a good 2-point play.
Atlanta’s next drive started well as solid runs by Batton and Dickerson moved the ball as well as a nice pass from Harrison to Darty.
Unfortunately a fumble killed the drive. Winnsboro punted the ball away on its next drive after a solid stand by Atlanta’s defense.
On Atlanta’s next drive, Darty broke tackles to get deep into Red Raider country and a facemask penalty set the Rabbs up at the 2-yard line.
The quarter ended with Winnsboro’s defense keeping the Rabbs from scoring.
In the second quarter, Atlanta turned the ball over on downs after not being able to get into the endzone from the 1-yard line.
Winnsboro drove 99 yards down the field for another score at the 10:47 mark. The extra point was good and the Red Raiders were up 15-8.
Solid defensive play by Marquavion Owens, Isaiah Chandler and Russ Limbrick plus a fumble recovery by Jalarion Andrews kept Winnsboro out of the endzone the rest of the half.
In the third frame, stout tackles by Dim Limbrick, Carmello Henderson and Dickerson kept the Red raider offense on its heels.
A fumble by the Rabbs deep in its own territory set Winnsboro up for its next score. The XP was good and Winnsboro was up 22-8.
A few drives later Atlanta was set up at the 44-yard line. Harrison picked up four yards on a QB keeper followed by nice runs from both Batton and Dickerson. Darty finished off the drive with a nice 36-yard TD scamper. The 2-point was no good but Atlanta cut the lead to 22-14 with 3:19 left in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Winnsboro scored the final touchdown of the contest. The 2-point try was no good but the score was set at 28-14. And that’s how the game and the season ended for the Rabbs.
