Hiram haunted by glowing goblins, ghouls

Glowing Goblins & Ghouls took the Monster Mile to the max Saturday as they raced a mile down Hiram Street in the spirit of fall fun at dusk.

Costumed kiddos from about 2-14 years old participated in the Monster Mile, sponsored by members of Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce Saturday.

Little ones were pushed in strollers by Mom or Dad, while older kids sped toward Flint Furtniture’s Finish Line to complete their glowing race, just past Wood’s Park.

Sheb Wooley’s 1950’s novelty song about the “one-eyed, one-horned, flying, purple people eater” blared through the downtown area outside Woods Park to get the little runners hyped for their mile.

Families and friends also got down with a dance party to more modern tunes like Cupid Shuffle and Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars. As the kids did their cool down, the adults got hyped up for their 5K Glow Run at 7 pm–just after dark.

Near the finish line, Healthcare Express, Heritage Hospice, and Genesis Primecare set up tables with refreshments, snacks, and all sorts of glowing garb like necklaces and bracelets, to help Glow Run live up to its name.

“I absolutely love to walk and I love the excitement,” Melissa Adcock, with River Valley Tractor said. Adcock was also there with her partner Billy Fincher, of Billy Fincher construction. Adcock was planning to help her two-year-old granddaughter, Skylar Adcock, through the Monster Mile.

“We are going to try to get her to walk as much as she can before using a stroller,” Adcock said.

Amber and Contrel Neal said they had four kiddos that would compete in the Monster Mile, all of whom seemed excited to get started.

The Ross family from Texarkana said they were excited to be in Atlanta participating in the annual Glow Run, with their three young children.

As the Monster Mile came to a close and the orange sky dimmed to dusk, adults lined up with their Glow gear to get their 5K on.

Skeleton clad pair Karmen and Jessica seemed to size up their adult competition in the upcoming race as they looked on from the intersection of Hiram and Williams streets.

Sponsors for the Glow Run 5K and Monster Mile also included: River Valley Tractor; Billy Fincher Construction; Atlanta City Development Corporation; Kelli Ashbrook, with StateFarm insurance; CNB City National Bank; Jeff Peace Financial; CHRISTUS ST. MICHAEL Hospital, Atlanta; Southwestern Electric Power Company; The Eye Guys; Frayed; TJ Bolt Construction; H.V. Caver, Inc.; Superior Realty; United Country Double Creek Land & Homes; Earnhardt’s Landscaping & More; Red River Credit Union; TEXAR; The Cutting Company Salon & Barber Shop; Chateau South; Cass County Fitness, Family Eye Care Clinic and of course Flint’s Furniture & Appliances, HealthCARE Express, and Genesis Prime-Care.
