Ennis Genitis Vaughan family
My grandfather Ennis Genitis Vaughan, pictured here in the later years of his life was born December 22, 1898 in Cass County. He died September 16, 1982 in Lone Star, Morris County, Texas. He was the son of William “Bill” Fredrick Vaughan and Virginia “Nettie” Antoinette Cook. He married Lucinda “Cinda” Susan Hedrick December 18, 1919 in Morris County, Texas. Reverend Anderson officiated. She was born March 26, 1903 in Denton, Denton County, Texas, and died July 19, 1972 in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. She was the daughter of Thomas Alexander Hedrick and Lucinda Susan Grant. Both Ennis and Lucinda are buried at the Creekmore Cemetery. On the 1900 Census Ennis was listed with his parent but by 1910 both parents were deceased, and he was living with relatives. On the 1920 he was a newlywed listed as head of household and living with his wife and brother. WWI draft registration card describes Ennis as tall, slender, brown eyes and dark hair.
Grandpa told about how hard his life was growing up without his parents. Some of his family even tried to take away what little his parents did leave behind. He talked about how he was “taken in” by aunts and uncles, (some nice, some not so nice) after his parents died. Research has shown that aunts, uncles, and grandmother tried to get custody of the boys when their father died. With the grandmother winning the court battle but according to stories grandpa told it was his oldest brother, Edgar, who he considered to be the one who raised him. His mother had died when he was three years old, and his father died only a couple of years later.
Ennis’ father was William Fredrick Vaughan who was born November 02, 1867 in Cass County he died there January 30, 1903. William was the son of Judson Henry Vaughan and Mary Ann Story. He married Virginia Antoinette Cook January 24, 1895 in Cass County. Virginia Antoinette Cook was born July 11, 1879 in Cass County and died there March 05, 1901. She was the daughter of James Wiley Franklin Cook and Mary Elizabeth Howell. Both William and Virginia are buried at Laws Chapel Cemetery.
Other Children of William Vaughan and Virginia Cook were James Edgar Vaughan, born December 15, 1895/6 in Cass County. He died March 01,1916 in Cass County. Known as Edgar by family, he married Maggie Shaw November 23, 1913 in Morris County, Texas. She was born January 17, 1896 and died April 24, 1987 in Cass County. James Edgar Vaughan is buried at Law’s Chapel Cemetery. Maggie Shaw is buried at Creekmore Cemetery. William Ernest Vaughan, born July 26, 1897 in Cass County. He died September 11/12,1933/4 in Cass County. Known as Ernest by family, he married Selena Lou Welsh December 22, 1925 in Cass County. She was born June 18, 1905 in Cusseta and died in July of 1997. William Ernest Vaughan and Selena Lou Welsh are both buried at Flat Creek Cemetery.
Madgie Vaughan was born January 17, 1901 in Cass County and died as a child July 07, 1903 in Cass County. She is buried at Laws Chapel Cemetery.
William Fredrick Vaughan’s father was our first know Cass Countian. Judson Henry Vaughan, born February 10, 1829 in Henry County, Georgia and died May 17, 1900 in Cass County. Family legend has it that he was the son of Davis Starling Vaughan and Patricia Carnes. He married Mary Ann Story October 01, 1855 in Linden, Cass County. Mary Ann Story, born November 11, 1836 in Perry County, Tennessee and died September 27, 1918 in Cass County. She was the daughter of Bennett B Story and Lydia Graham. Judson served the Confederacy during the Civil War as a Pvt. in Capt. Isaac F. Harrison’s Co. A Wirt Adams’ Regiment of Cavalry. He appears on Company Muster Roll for Aug 29, 1861 to April 30, 1862. He enlisted Feb. 28,1862 from Texas Parish by Capt. Harrison for 3 year or the war. He was listed on the 1867 Voter Registration Davis County (now Cass) as J.H. Vaughan and said he had lived in Texas for 13 years. Both Judson Henry Vaughan and Mary Ann Story are buried at Cornett Cemetery.
Other children of Judson Vaughan and Mary Story were: Martha “Matt” Vaughan was born October 1858 in Texas and died June 07, 1933 in Cass County. Never married and is buried beside her parents at Cornett Cemetery.
Robert Henry “Bud” Vaughan was born April 28,1860 in Texas and died 1927 in Cass County. He married Martha “Mattie” Rebecca Scott Cook December 31, 1895 in Cass County. She was born May 01, 1866 and died October 27, 1905 in Cass County. She was the sister of Virginia Antoinette Cook who married William, Robert’s brother. Both Robert Henry Vaughan and Martha Rebecca Scott Cook are buried at Dalton Cemetery.
Arizona “Ari” E. Vaughan was born March 06, 1862 in Texas and died March 06, 1890 in Cass County. She married John H. Ward September 04, 1879 in Cass County. He was born 1860 in Georgia. Ari is buried at Dalton Cemetery.
Ludelia “Deale” Vaughan was born 1864 in Texas and died January 1949. She married Samuel L. Hicks September 28, 1891. He was born 1855 in Alabama and died November 05, 1910. Ludelia Vaughan and Samuel L. Hicks are buried at Cornett Cemetery.
John Preston “Cap” Vaughan was born May 08, 1866 in Texas and died October 25, 1954. He married first Sallie Hines on May 12, 1887 in Cass County. He married second Emma Kelly March 25, 1897. Emma died August 15, 1907. John Preston Vaughan is buried at Dalton Cemetery.
Edward Lee Vaughan was born September 13, 1870 in Cass County and died June 25,1953 in Naples, Morris County, Texas. He married first Julia A. O’Rear November 12, 1896 in Cass County. She was born December 25, 1876 in Texas and died November 14, 1913. She is buried at O’Farrell Cemetery. Lee married second Fannie Louise Hale March 13, 1921 in Morris County, Texas. She was born December 30,1896 in Delta County, Texas. She died June 12, 1982 in Naples, Morris County, Texas. Lee is buried at O’Farrell Cemetery.
Mollie Frances Vaughan was born June 1872 in Texas and married John Hague.
Walter Judson “Sip” Vaughan was born 1874 in Texas and married Minnie Plummer. She was born August 12, 1872.
Alabama “Bamm” Izora Vaughan was born April 07, 1876 in Texas and died May 11, 1949 in Cass County. She married James Franklin O’Rear January 12, 1896 in Cass County. He was born August 22, 1873 in Cass County and died October 21, 1953 in Linden.
