L-K beats Overton 28-26 on Homecoming night
Linden-Kildare celebrated Homecoming with a big 28-26 win over Overton last Friday night.
First Quarter
The Tigers received the ball to begin the game but turned the ball over after just four plays.
Overton ate up much of the clock on its first drive and scored a touchdown at the 4:57 mark.
The point after was good and Overton was up 7-0. L-K answered on its next drive as Taeshun Mitchell picked up 32 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and gained another three the play after.
Runs by Jakyric Nard, Bug Patterson and Jacorey Birmingham brought the Tigers within six yards of the goal line.
From there Nard connected with Charlie Kirkland for a touchdown. Mitchell ran in the 2-point play and L-K was up 8-7 with 1:42 left in the first quarter.
The quarter ended with Nard intercepting a pass.
Second Quarter
Both Taeshun MItchell and Eli Mitchell picked up nice yards on the ground before Nard crossed the goal line for a TD.
The 2-point play was no good but L-K increased its lead to 14-7 with 10:40 left in the second stanza.
The Mustangs answered on its next drive with a big pass play for a score, and after a successful PAT the score was tied at 14-all with 9:21 left in the first half.
L-K gave Overton another dose of runs by T. Mitchell, E, Mitchell and Nard on its next drive.
Nard eventually scored from two yards out and E. Mitchell ran in the 2-point play to put the Tigers up 22-14 with 5:35 left on the clock.
The Tiger defense fell on a fumble during Overton’s next drive but a penalty overturned the gift.
A few plays later L-K received a gift for keeps as Nard stripped an Overton player of the ball as he was just a few yards from the endzone.
Nice runs by Nard, E, Mitchell and Birmingham took the Tigers from its own 5-yard line to the Overton 26.
Nard attempted a pass for a score as time expired.
Third Quarter
Overton scored on its first drive of the second half but a failed 2-point play kept L-K ahead 22-21 with 9:32 left in the third frame.
After forcing the Tigers to turn the ball over on its next drive, Overton scored again with 5:14 left on the clock.
The 2-point play was no good but the Mustangs were up 26-22.
L-K’s next drive spanned two quarters with the addition of a lengthy injury timeout for an injured player from Overton.
The drive began at the 48 and ended at the Overton 3-yard line.
Fourth Quarter
The 18-play drive ended with L-K unable to score from the 3-yard line.
After the turnover, Overton ran two plays before Omar Ruiz fell on a fumble and gave the Tigers great field position at the Overton 13.
Nard scored seven plays later and after an unsuccessful 2-point attempt L-K was up 28-26 with 4:59 left in the game.
Overton moved the ball from its own 35 to the L-K 38 and looked primed to score, but as a Mustang player was set to cross the goal line he fumbled and Nard jumped on the loose ball.
Two personal foul penalties in the final two-anda- half minutes didn’t help Overton, but a stout stand by the Tiger defense made sure the Mustangs didn’t score again.
With the victory L-K picked up its first win and put an exclamation point on Homecoming night.
The Tigers have a BYE this week.
