Lucinda Susan Hedrick Vaughan Family

My grandmother Lucinda Susan Hedrick pictured here with me was born March 26, 1903 in Denton, Denton County, Texas and died July 19, 1972 in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. She was the daughter of Thomas Alexander Hedrick and Lucinda Susan Grant. She married Ennis Genitis Vaughan 1919 in Morris County, Texas. She lived all of her married life in Cass County and is buried at Creekmore Cemetery.

I really don’t remember that much about Grandma. I remember how large a lady she was, that she wore glasses, played the piano, and had pretty things in her bedroom. One thing I do remember about Grandma was her ability to grow flowers. Everyone says she had a “green thumb.” My dad says she could take a dead stick and put it in the ground, and it would sprout roots.

Her father was Thomas Alexander Hedrick. He was born March 14, 1835 in Tallassee, Giles County, Tennessee and died July 17,1918 in Naples, Morris County, Texas. He was the son of William Henry Hedrick. He married Lucinda Susan Grant November 20, 1878 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. Thomas owned land in Cass County in the later part of his life. He is buried at Creekmore Cemetery.

Lucinda Susan Grant, born November 1862 in Newton County, Arkansas and died 1906 in Denton, Denton County, Texas. She was the daughter of Thaddeus Theopolus Grant and Sarah Elizabeth Duncan. Lucinda is buried at Page Town Cemetery South of Denton, Texas.

Thomas’ civil war pension papers reveal that Thomas says he was born in Giles County, Tenn. Has lived in Texas since 1857. He says he is 78 years old. He says he resides in Denton County and has for 22 or 23 years. He says he served from 1862 to close of war and that he enlisted in July 1862. Served in Company A Texas Partisan Rangers, Confederate States Cavalry, under L.M. Martin Colonel and Dick Randolph, Captain. He was a private in Co. B 5 Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers. Appears on Company Muster Roll for Dec 31, 1862 to June 30, 1863. Enlisted July 5, 1862 at Sherman Texas by John L Randolph for 3 years. Family lore tells “his horse was shot by a Yankee while he was riding it, he walked on and later that night cut loose and stole a horse from a Yankee camp and rode it off.”

Edward Hedrick died at age 9 and is buried at Page Town Cemetery south of Denton, Texas.

Mattie Lee Hedrick died in childhood and is buried beside her mother at Pagetown Cemetery south of Denton, Texas. She was a twin to Horace.

Horace Hedrick died in childhood and is buried beside his mother at Pagetown Cemetery south of Denton, Texas. He was a twin to Mattie Lee. Margaret Etta Hedrick, born May 13, 1881 in Grayson County, Texas and died June 13,1942 in Dallas, Texas. She married first Charlie Henry Skaggs March 10, 1899 in Ardmore, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He was born December 25, 1865 in Denton, Denton County, Texas and died June 19, 1937 in Enid, Oklahoma. She married second Joseph Porter Flanagin November 12, 1906 in Sanger, Denton County, Texas and born March 14,1851 in Booneville, Mississippi. He died January 02, 1929 in Alfalfa, Oklahoma. She married third Charlie Albert Burkhalter August 12, 1929 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was born April 26, 1877 in Queen City, Cass County, Texas and died April 20, 1953 in Stockton, California. Margaret Etta Hedrick is buried Swisher Cemetery, Lake Dallas, Texas.

Frances Ellen Hedrick, born April 28, 1884 in Grayson County, Texas and died April 28,1937 in Naples, Morris County, Texas. Ellen never married and was sick a lot of her life. She was living with and being cared for by C.A. Burkhalter and Margaret Burkhalter at the time of her death. Margaret Burkhalter was her sister. Ellen is buried at Creekmore Cemetery 1st grave north of TA Hedrick, her father.

Sarah Elizabeth Hedrick, born February 14, 1891 in Denton County, Texas and died May 31,1980 in Clarksville, Arkansas. She married Benjamin Burrell Kimbrell.

Thomas Franklin Hedrick, Sr., born March 15,1891 in Denton County, Texas and died January 31, 1983 in Carrollton, Texas. He married Ola Fay Calvert July 05, 1920 in Denton, Denton County, Texas. She was born June 29, 1900 in Texas and died September 07, 1966 in Coppell, Texas.

Willie Lou Hedrick, born January 09, 1893 in Denton, Denton County, Texas and died August 09, 1957 in Mineola, Wood County, Texas. She married Thomas Walter Stone March 14,1911 in Denton, Denton County, Texas. He was born February 1877 in Denton County, Texas and died March 29, 1932 in Lake Dallas, Denton County, Texas. Willie Lou Hedrick is buried at Sand Springs Cemetery, northwest of Mineola, Wood County, Texas. Thomas Walter Stone is buried at Green Valley, Denton County, Texas.

William L Hedrick, born about 1894 in Texas. Annie Houston Hedrick, born November 04, 1899 in Denton, Denton County, Texas and died March 23, 1963 in Dallas County, Texas. She married John Jefferson Stone September 04, 1912. He was born May 01, 1890 in Texas and died August 03,1947. Annie Houston Hedrick is buried at Swisher Cemetery Lake Dallas.
