By 1902 the city of Atlanta had electricity furnished by Southwestern Gas and Electric Company, with a power plant on West Street. However, it was more than 37 years later that homes outside the city limits were wired with electricity through the newly-formed Bowie Cass Electric Cooperative.
ELECTRIC LIGHT FRANCHISE GRANTED The City Council of Atlanta, Texas, in session, December 11th, 1902, granted a franchise to W.A.BoytonandAssociatestoerectandmaintainanelectriclightplantinthecity.Construction to start within 90 days, and to have same in operation within five months from this date.
