Food Bank adds new location

The East Texas Food Bank is adding a second location, Atlanta, TX, to the Senior Box Program distribution in Cass County. Sign-ups for the new location will be held on Friday, April 8, at Trinity Church, 101 B Loop 59 in Atlanta from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Atlanta will be in addition to the Senior Box distribution that’s already offered at the Linden Church of Christ at 312 Highway 8 on the first Tuesday of even numbered months from 8-10 a.m.

Poor nutrition can drastically affect the health of senior citizens, who are more susceptible to a variety of health problems related to an inadequate diet. The East Texas Food Bank Senior Box Program provides nutritious food each month to low-income seniors, who live in rural communities. Approximately 4,100 seniors receive a box monthly at over 48 sites throughout our service area. In fiscal year 2021, over 43,000 boxes were served to seniors through this program.

There are three requirements to qualify for the program: age, income and residency. Applicants must be 60 years of age or older and provide legal documentation of identity. Declaration of gross income is required and Texas residency. Based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines for the Elderly here’s where your income must be to qualify:

Household Size Monthly

1 $1,473

2 $1,984

3 $2,495

4 $3,007

Qualified individuals will receive a free box of food once a month. Each box contains shelf stable items such as: protein, milk, cereal, vegetables, fruits, pasta and juices. The boxes are assembled by volunteers, loaded onto a truck and then distributed at drop-off locations in communities throughout East Texas.
