Atlanta set to host own relays

Atlanta’s track program began its own relays back in 1996.

On the boys’ side, Atlanta has won the meet 17 times which included 12 straight from 1996 to 2008.

The other winners include: Texas High (4), Longview (1) and Tatum (1).

On the girls’ side, Liberty-Eylau has won 10 times including the last six. Texas High has won it six times, Linden-Kildare twice, Forney twice, Atlanta once, Longview once and Kaufman once.

The meet was cancelled in both 2006 and 2015 be cause of weather and in 2020 because of COVID.

This Thursday, Mar. 10, Atlanta will host its 27th Atlanta Lions Club/Gordon Pynes/Runnin’ Rabbs Relays.

Last year the varsity boys’ won first and the varsity girls’ placed third. It’s been a few years since any of the meet record

It’s been a few years since any of the meet record were broken, On the boys’ side, Thacker from Alto broke the discus record with a toss of 166 feet, 8 inches in 2018, and on the girls’ side, Atlanta’s Te-Shunna Sheppard broke the triple jump record with a leap of 38 feet, 11 1/2 inches and Liberty-Eylau’s Green broke the 400m dash record with a finish of 58.40.

Atlanta record holders that are still holding: (BOYS) 2002 - Bo Price in the 3200m run at 9:23.80, 2013 - Chris Ibarra in the 1600m run at 1:54.46, 1997 - Reggie Hill in the 100m dash at 10.31, 1996 - Courtney Richardson in the 110m hurdles at 13.85, 1997 - the 400m relay team of Derrick Blaylock, Trae Lawson, Scooter McKinney and Reggie Hill at 40.93 and 2004 – the 1600m relay team of Curtis Burns, Dallas Washington, Nick Miller and Calvin Graham.

(GIRLS) 2017 - TeShunna Sheppard in the triple jump at 38 feet, 11 1/2 inches, and 1998 - Sarah Haydel in both the 1600m and 3200m run at 5:20.97 and 11:35.00 respectively.
