Runnin’ Rabbs, JV Rabbs compete in Maverick Relays
Atlanta kicked off its track season by competing in the Maverick Relays.
The varsity boys’ and girls’ programs competed on Feb. 17, which came on the tail end of a rain storm that soaked the area.
The JV boys competed on Feb. 14.
Varsity Boys
The first few relays are normally run without some of the runners who are still playing basketball.
Nonetheless the Runnin’ Rabbs battled athletes from host Marshall, Kilgore, Lufkin, Longview, Mount Pleasant, Jefferson, Texas High, White Oak, Pine Tree and Gilmer.
Atlanta finished fifth overall against mostly 5A competition on a soggy, windy and cold afternoon.
In the 800m run Matthew Morin placed fourth overall with a time of 2:07.34, the 4x100m relay team of Zackyus Jackson, La’Randion Dowden, Ahmani Jackson, and Isaiah Chandler placed fourth at 43.35, the 4x200m relay team of Matthew Cauley, Ja’Branden Wells, Ahmani Jackson and Chandler placed second at 1:34.25 and the 4x400m relay team of Cauley, Wells, Robinson and Chandler placed first at 3:35.03.
Varsity Girls
The girls faced the same schools and did well in its first meet of the season.
Kaylon Partain placed second overall in the 800m run at 2:40.09, Aurelia Gielser placed fifth in the 3200m run at 13.17.50 and sixth in the 1600m run at 6:16.84, MaKayla Martin placed fourth in the 400m dash at 1:07.06 and the 4x400m relay team of Partain, Martin, Cha’Toya Hurd and Jaliyah Brown placed fourth at 4:31.25.
JV Boys
The JV team went up against schools twice its size or more as they competed with Pine Tree, Longview, Mount Pleasant, Texas High, Lufkin and Marshall.
For the JV squad, Markeylin Batton had a superb meet.
The young Rabbit placed first in the 100m dash with a time of 11.22, first in the 200m dash at 23.81 and first in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, five inches.
Teammates Hudson Hale placed fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 57.06 and Marquayvious Richardson placed fifth in the 110m hurdles at 19.75.
The 4x100m relay team of Dimoree Limbrick, Cooper Swanson, Carmello Henderson and Richardson placed fourth overall at 47.14, the 4x200m relay team of Limbrick, Swanson, Henderson and Chase Kindred placed fifth at 1:37.85 and the 4x400m relay team of Hale, Henderson, Allen Leach and Batton placed third at 3:51.63.
In the field events Limbrick placed sixth in the triple jump at 34 feet, 11 1/2 inches, and placed second in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches.
There was also a Big Man Relay featuring Corbyn Wilson, Zamarian Ivory, Kanya Simmons and Xavier Nash. That team placed third overall with a time of 57.40.
