Carter & Sarah Cannon
Carter C. Cannon and his wife Sarah (perhaps Latimer - not proved) emigrated to the part of Texas that became Cass Co. in October 1841 from Yalobusha Co., MS, where they had lived since the early 1830s. He patented his Cass land in 1856 and 1857.
By the middle 1850s, however, they moved to Village Creek, near Arlington, Tarrant Co., TX. The Cannons had 320 acres in Cass Co. located 11 miles S. W. of Linden. Cannon Creek in Cass is named for the Carter Cannon family. They were in the 1850 Cass Co. census.
Carter was born about 1794 in Greenville District, SC (now Pickens Co.), and Sarah “Sally” was about the same age as he was. His parents were Russell/Russel Cannon and Jane/Jean (perhaps Campbell - not proved) of Greenville District/Pickens Co., SC.
His paternal grandparents were Simcock Cannon and Jane Rudd, originally from Virginia, Simcock first being found in Amelia Co. tax records in 1751 and Prince Edward, Charlotte, and Lunenburg counties’ records after that. Simcock’s and Russell’s last name is also spelled Kennon in some Virginia and South Carolina records, and it is not known if they were related to a well-known Virginia Kennon family who pronounced their name “Cannon.”
Jane Rudd’s parents were John Rudd and Hannah (perhaps Russel or Russell, not proved), and her grandparents were John Rudd and Avis Whitaker. The Rudds resided in Henrico Co., VA.
Before living in Mississippi, Carter and Sarah Cannon lived in Lawrence Co., TN, found in the 1830 census there, and they were in the 1820 Pendleton District, SC, census before that.
A descendant wrote in a 1969 letter that Carter Cannon was an invalid for 40 years and also prosperous (although Yalobusha Co., MS, records show his property being sold in a sheriffs sale around 1840, suggesting bankruptcy at that particular time).
The Yalobusha County History issued in 1982 by the Heritage Committee of the County Historical Society stated that “in 1833 a crippled man named Carter Cannon lived at the Perry place south of O’tucelofa.” The nature of his disability is not known.
The known children of Sarah and Carter Cannon are: Martha “Patsy,” born about 1817 in Pendleton District, SC; JohnR., born about 1824 in the same area; Elijah C., born about 1825 in Lawrence Co., TN, Nancy R, bora 18 Jul 1833 in Yalobusha Co., MS; and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cannon, bora in June 1836, also in Yalobusha Co.
Martha married John S. Barnes on 28 Feb 1835 in Yalobusha, and they came to Cass Co. with her parents. Martha died before July 1874, perhaps in Handley, Tarrant Co., TX. [See separate story about this family.] John R. married S. A. (last name unknown) between 1847 and 1859 and died 7 Jul 1876 in Tarrant Co., apparently childless.
In the 1860 Harrison Co., TX, census he gave his occupation as “gambler,” but in the 1870 Tarrant Co. census he was listed as a farmer.
Elijah C. married Ophelia M. Myrick before 1860 and died about 1876 in Tarrant Co., leaving four children. Nancy R. and Dewitt Clinton Harrison were married 14 Dec 1853 in Tarrant Co., and she died in Arlington on 23 March 1883 (buried in the Harrison Family Cemetery at Arlington).
They had eight children, of whom five were still living in 1895. After Nancy’s death, D. C. Harrison married again to Alzeria E. Harmon. Elizabeth married a Mr. Watson before 1860, and they had two daughters.
About 1870 she married William Thomas “Will” Goin, perhaps in Tarrant Co., and they had six children. She died about 1915, probably in Okmulgee Co. or Ellis Co. and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Lone Star Cemetery of Ellis Co., OK.
There are other possible children. Carter and Sarah had a James Cannon living with them in the 1850 Cass Co. census, but he might not have been a son.
He was born about 1831 in Mississippi, but a male of his age did not appear in the 1840 Yalobusha Co., MS, census for Carter’s and Sarah’s family.
The 1820 Pendleton District, SC, census for the Carter Cannon household shows an unidentified female born about 1810-1820 and another unidentified female born about 1804-1810.
The 1830 Lawrence Co., TN, census for Carter and Sarah shows one unidentified female born about 1800-1810 and two more females born between 1820 and 1830. These might have been daughters, but they might also have been children of another couple living with the Cannons.
The man was born about 1780-1790, and the wife could have been the female born about 1800-1810. A Jane Cannon and a Daniel Archer posted a marriage bond (but not certificate) on 24 Aug 1829 in Lawrence Co., and this Jane Cannon might have been a daughter of Carter and Sarah and therefore one of the females in the 1820 census for the Carter Cannon household. She might also have been some other relative or not a relative at all.
Carter C. Cannon died 27 April 1875 in Johnson Station, Tarrant Co.; Sarah preceded him in death at a date unknown.
Martha Cannon’s children are described in the history of John S. Barnes and Martha Cannon. John R. Cannon apparently had no children. The children of Elijah Cannon were Sarah, Elizabeth, Nancy Jane, Rhoda Z., and William Carter.
The children of Nancy Cannon were: Rhoda B., Francis Lee, Mary E., Emma, Ada M., and two others whose names are not known. The children of Elizabeth Cannon were: Ella and Lou Watson by her first marriage and by her second: William Arthur, Willis Oscar, James, Belle, and Walter L.
