Rotary Reflections 2022

When is it not a busy time of the year? Years ago when making plans to “think” about something, it was too easily said, “we’ll do that in January” when it’s not so busy! Oops!

Rotary doesn’t just start in January! Our club is busy all year long, but as the calendar pages turn over, it’s a time for the RYLA kids to think about their adventure next month (have fun!) and the students in high school to think about scholarships. Next month I’ll tell you more about the scholarships that will be available. Oh, and we’re also thinking about going fishin’, so stay tuned! Truly, as our International President says, Rotary is to “serve to change lives.” And you know, those dogs and cats that have been spayed or neutered definitely have had their lives changed!

We have been so blessed to live in the USA! When you look at the world picture, many do without what we take for granted: education, water, sanitation to name a few focus directions. Having five grandsons, part of me prickles thinking about “education for girls”, but the reality is that in many countries, girls do not go to school as long as boys do, if at all. And that hinges on those other two areas: water and sanitation. I’d love to go and help dig a well, but likely my shovel wouldn’t be nearly as efficient as someone younger, but I can still help through my contributions.

One aspect of Rotary that I’m especially grateful for is our Rotary Foundation. It’s one of only 3 organizations to get the top rating. When I give $100 to the Foundation, they invest that money to pay for salaries from what it earns for three years AND THEN give it all back to the projects that Rotary spearheads through our clubs, districts, and international . As we start thinking about those IRAs, that’s a good direction for some of that money.

And what are those projects besides those mentioned above? What about the birds, bees and butterflies? Yes, some clubs have noticed they also need help and have planted gardens and trees to aid these critters. I’ve noticed as I walk the dogs that I’m hearing fewer birds. Hmm, may need to check on that! And what about plastic “islands” in the oceans? (to say nothing about those plastic “islands” in the ditches!) What can I do to make a difference? Do you cut up the plastic rings that join soda bottles so ducks especially don’t get caught in them? I’m only ONE, but together we can make a huge difference. Let’s just DO IT!

We are still picking up trash in front of Atlanta and Queen City High Schools. Feel free to join us and the QCHS Interactors as we pick up trash this month at their school. It does make a difference, though I’ve noticed when walking back to my car, there’s already NEW trash! Will it ever end?

Come join us and tell us your “button” that wants to garner attention. We meet at Luigi’s the third Thursday evenings each month at 6 pm. Or call me if you want more info. (903) 691-9717.
